I suppose I shouldn't confess we don't have gates on the stairs and my kids walk up/down them all day long.
Well DS is about 8 months old and just started crawling like he's on a mission. We've spent the past 2 weeks babyproofing (slash "re-decorating" as in moving the paper shredder into the bathroom... very chic). He has zero depth perception and also zero understanding of the dangers of falling down the stairs. I can understand skipping several things, but for us, gates on the stairs were an absolute must. On the main floor alone, there are 2 opportunities to fall down a flight a stairs and one to climb up a set of stairs (and most likely subsequently fall down).
Both my kids never had any desire to crawl even near the stairs that went down so it was a nonissue for us. My youngest just started being interested in going down the stairs on her own, but she sits on her butt to go down to the next stair so I'm not exactly concerned with her falling.
I know, you are woman and hear you roar and all that but if I know a man lives with you, unless you like to do it, I just think he should or hire out. I just hate seeing a woman all sweaty mowing the lawn.
I have to write this before I forget, so forgive me if someone actually already said this (I'll go back and read it after).
My UO is that I HATE when girls wear pink jerseys for sports teams.
First of all, you should be proud to wear your team colors. I wear Brown and Orange for my football team and it's ugly, but it makes me happy to wear it.
Second of all, you can't tell what team you are wearing unless you look very very closely.
That's all, now off to read.
I understand the purpose behind the pink jerseys and whatnot, and while I don't hate it, I definitely prefer to wear my team's colors on a jersey.
Please enlighten us, because to me the only purpose is to say "oh I'm just here to support my SO, I dont really understand all this stuff."
I remember in college I had a pink jersey on and some guy started making fun of me especially since he liked the opposite team. When I started shooting off team/player stats and I proved I actually knew more than he did he slowly backed away. LOL

My favorite color is pink. Has been forever. But when wearing team gear the purpose is to support your team. I feel that wearing pink team gear is whispering your team name while shouting "Look at me! I like sports! And I'm a girl! Aren't I cute!?"

DS seems to only be interested in the most dangerous and/or not kid friendly things around.
Entire room full of colorful toys? Lame. Cord of lamp? Bin of remote controls? TV speakers? Diaper Genie? Garbage can? Sign him up.
Yeah, both my kids like non-toy items too. It never really bothered me though--I just kept an eye on them if they were interested in a cord or remote. Trash/diaper genie we do keep in an area of the house that they cant get to but everything else is fair game.

I thought they were part of the NFL's breast cancer awareness stuff. Is that not the case anymore?
I don't think the all pink jerseys were ever for Breast Cancer support.
Exhibit A:
Exhibit B is the NFL breast cancer awareness gear:
A lot of my patients have young kids and a ton of them tell me they aren't baby proofing, they will just teach their child to stay out of the cabinet, etc. Toddlers lack self control...its their nature! Someone is going to get hurt due to stupidity. There is nothing wrong with baby proofing the crap out of your house
I didn't babyproof my house, and I think it's fine. No, I don't have glass bowls out on the coffe table or anything, but the house isn't on baby lockdown. It works for us, and it isn't such a huge deal when we go to other people's houses.
So, I say to each their own.
We don't have stairs (well, technically we do to the finished downstairs area but it's closed off by a door - not open access). We covered outlets and I have some cabinet locks on the doors containing things I don't want her getting into. Otherwise, she's in a 100% child-proofed daycare center all workday long and when she is home with us on weekends, one or both of us is with her. She prefers to play near or with us so it's not like she's roaming out of sight a whole lot. And when I'm home alone and need to be out of the room for long, I put her into her PnP with her toys & books (she can't climb out yet so it's a super safe spot).
Yeah, we have stairs going up & down a level. Not gated generally, but I can put them up as needed. Our friends had kids before us, so we put things like cleaners up a long time ago. I would say our entire house is kid-friendly, but it is in no way kid or baby proofed.
Like I said, to each their own. I do think that kid-friendly is good enough for us, and probably most parents. However, they have to be comfortable with it. If not, then it's not for them.
Both my kids never had any desire to crawl even near the stairs that went down so it was a nonissue for us. My youngest just started being interested in going down the stairs on her own, but she sits on her butt to go down to the next stair so I'm not exactly concerned with her falling.

LOL Same here.
I think this is one of those "you know your own kid" kind of things. I used to think babyproofing was a little over-the-top until I realized that my kid's favorite activities include running without looking where he's going, climbing everything, taking things apart--including things that don't belong to him--and touching gross things that make me shriek. I've been converted to team babyproof.
I know, you are woman and hear you roar and all that but if I know a man lives with you, unless you like to do it, I just think he should or hire out. I just hate seeing a woman all sweaty mowing the lawn.
I mow the lawn. I do it every week. I do not want to give somebody $50.00 a week to do a simple task. My husband was doing it every weekend now we have more time to do other things.
My UO: I think if you have lived in an area and been flooded out twice already while you lived there you need to move and I don't think it's my job as a tax payer to come and bail you out yet again when it floods for the umpteenth time.
This opinion comes from the fact that there are towns down by where my parents along the Mississsippi River that get flooded every 3-4 years roughly and then have to have goverment assistance to help repair the damage or they have to send in the National Guard to help sandbag the area to keep it from flooding. At some point get a clue it's time to move, it's a river and it's gonna flood again in a couple years. Before people jump on me as evil I'm not saying it's the same as places that get hit by a tornado, they are freak things that may only strike the same area every 50 years vs. an area that's highly flood proned. And yes I realize this is a UO hence why it's here.
mbenit, If we had a yard, which we don't, I would 100% be the one mowing it. Just like I'm in charge of all the repairs in the house and taking out the trash.

This is the most random thing I've ever heard. I will mow our lawn occassionaly because DH is busy, I enjoy it, and I can't afford to hire out. Your UO is stupid.
This made me lol. With all this mundane football talk, here you are just cutting straight to the point. I just didn't expect it.
Yeah, that's pretty funny. Very no nonsense. I guess her unpopular opinion was unpopular.

Football Sunday is our favorite family time of the year. We all wear jerseys and PJ pants all day. DH and I take turns getting to put DD in our team stuff. We drag all of DD's toys in the living room and play in the floor all day while we watch our games, check our fantasy updates, etc. We always make yummy football snacks or a big crock pot of chili or potato soup once it's cold and eat on it all day long. Football = family time in our house and I adore it.
Pink jerseys suck hard. I hate them.
The only things we have baby proofed is a gate on the stairs and chemicals and sharp objects are either locked up or out of reach.
I don't think any chore is more the "man's job" or the "woman's job". If both people don't want to do a task, I don't think there's one person that it defaults to based on a gender role.
I love all the political talk on here.
I also won't use my children to make political statements through their clothes. Although, DD has a shirt that says, "I only date boys that recycle." I think it's cute, but I hope she's not a lesbian and gives me crap about it later.
I don't get why people get all paranoid that Republicans are going to steal women's reproductive rights. The majority of the sh!t people say during an election campaign never comes to fruition. They're just trying to appeal to the people who are going to vote for them (and in our country, it's older Americans who go out and vote). Congress is never going to let that sh!t pass so I don't really get the outrage.

This is how it goes down at our home.
Our Sundays are like this too. We got DD a ref jersey one year and the boys like to throw our homemade penalty and challenge flags.

This is one of the stupidest things you've ever said. Have you not paid attention to the legislation that has been passing in states all over the country? Women's reproductive rights are already being stolen. Who's to say they won't be further annihilated when another nut gets elected?
Yes--at the state level. That can happen regardless if a Democrat or Republican is in office though.

Same thing could be said about Democrats stealing your gun rights.
I never said it was anyone's job based on role. I said I hate to see women doing it when I know they are (hating it) and doing it just because their SO does not want to. It is unfair that she would have to do it all the time. We just had a hurricane, you couldn't get off your lazyass to at least help her pick up branches andshit and hauling it to the road!!!
For me, it is like the woman who does all the child care or whatever because SO won't. It had nothing to do with the grass persay. Sheesh! Who knew you all would get all worked up over mowing the grass? If you like mowing the lawn it never applied to you lady!
I think that if you take a peek at your original statement and compare it to what you said right here you might see why people took it the way they did. You just weren't very specific in the begining.
That being said, I will never mow the lawn. I am deathly allergic to grass. I would suffer for the rest of the day and into the next from the airborne part. I can't even walk through the yard in a pair of sandals without suffering for the rest of the day. It cuts me up. I hate it. I am so envious of my children who can frolic in the soft, cool green grass barefoot.

And it scares the shiit out of me because the only thing that really keeps it off the federal level in the end can be the veto power of the President. And Mittens doesn't sound like he is going to veto anything that might prevent people from experiencing their blessings.

Regardless of the actual threat of their views being put in to law, the outrage is in them holding that opinion of women and their reproductive rights.
At least, for me.
Exactly. We have to quit electing old, white men that think they should have any opinion whatsoever on WOMEN'S issues.

Right, but the house is an even split right now. Unless the House/Congress is heavily Republican there's no chance in hellll something would pass like that.
I think politically people should spend more time worrying about who is winning office at the state level because they have much more influence over their lives than the President will. People's focus is in the wrong place.
The house is more conservative right now, right? So, if Mittens were elected, he might have an easier time pushing through some of his more asinine views, such as overturning abortion laws and all that.
I don't think it's unreasonable to be nervous about this possiblity.

Certainly not that unreasonable, but I just don't see anything that huge happening and not being challenged. And by then congress would be primarily democrat so it would be even less likely for that to happen.
The bigger threat would be to worry about how many supreme court justices may be put in place by a conservative president. Not that justices of either persuasion always rule accordingly, but I honestly think that has a bigger impact on the HUGE issues, such as abortion.
White chocolate chip cookies are awesome, and may trump normal chocolate chip cookies. I made three dozen last night except they came out way cakier than what is shown here.
Recipe? Please?
1 cup butter (2 sticks, softened)
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
3/4 cup cocoa powder
2 eggs
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp vanilla
1 bag white chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter and sugar, then add vanilla and eggs. Add cocoa and flour in 1/4 cup increments and mix. Add chips. Bake for 8-9 minutes.
I made 3 dozen using the small icecream scoop/melon baller thingee.

There is so much truth here. Not that the presidential election is unimportant, but that local government should be given a lot more importance.

I'm with you on this point.
I still understand the outrage at what's being said by current and potential Congress representatives, but you're right that to protect rights and see more immediate change, people need to be paying more attention on the state and local levels.
I still think it's more about appealing to those constituents who are going to actually go out and vote for you. Women 18-34 don't make up that demographic.

Mwah! Thanks!
BTW, I added a half tsp of rum flavoring too. It added a slightly butterscotchy undertone that was pleasant.
