I hate maternity clothes

So I have been in denial about my growing bump and have been living out of stretchy skirts and dresses this summer. I am starting to get sick of wearing the same 6 outfits, so I went to Macys, Old Navy and Target today to look at maternity clothes. I couldn't find anything I liked. I ened up buying the bellaband to squeeze into my shorts and it is so uncomfortable. I found myself having a semi melt down in the car on the way home from frustration. Anyone else feeling this way?

Re: I hate maternity clothes

  • Dude, I finally broke down and got some maternity clothes this past weekend.  OMG, maternity dressy pants are seriously the most comfortable things ever.  It's like wearing pajama pants to work.  I can't believe I tried to fight it for so long.

  • Yep I'm with you! I finally broke down and started wearing some of the maternity clothes I've bought. A lot of it is still too big though... this in-between size in really hard to deal with. I feel fat & ridiculous in just about anything I wear.

    Dear Baby Pacheco...
  • I LOVE my maternity clothes...sorry you're having such a hard time, I've been in them since like 10 weeks or sooner, can't remember...but I was just sick of feeling SQUEEZED I had/have really bad acid reflux I felt like the maternity clothes definitely helped...quit fighting it and get some! I like the full panel, no squeezing and like PP said...it's like PJ's...

  • I am having the same problem, the belly band is so unconfortable that I can't wait to get off work every day to change, and every time I look at maternity clothes I want to cry because they have nothing that I like!!!

  • I love the clothing at Motherhood maternity.  I got 3 pairs of the secret belly panel jeans and they are Sooooo comfortable.  I also have a pair of capris and a pair of convertible pants capris - long pants.  I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to regular pants.

  • Oh, and the maternity shirts are awesome.  You can actually see the bump more pronounced and it's not so hard to tell that I'm actually pregnant and not just gaining weight.  No more "is she, or isn't she" looks.

We have a destination maternity by our house. I went there once before, but the khaki pants I tried on were so scratchy feeling! I guess I should  give it a second chance. Thanks for the suggestions. I get like this shopping for regular clothes too. Easily overwhelmed.

Kohl's also has some pants by Motherhood.  They have super soft, full-belly panels.  They're seamless, so you can't see them underneath your shirts.

  • I have bought (or even really looked at maternity tops) but I love love love my mat pants from Old Navy. Dark skinny jeans are my favorite and they look just like my old pants! I'm still fine in all my old tops and should be for quite sometime.
  • Hey! I'm about 16 weeks pregnant now.  If your signature image is up to date then we're pretty close.  I just found out 2 weeks ago that we were expecting, now I know why my jeans were uncomfortably tight!   You are definitely not alone in the discomfort.  I came across a specialty store called A Pea in the Pod in Seattle WA.    The attendant explained that the Bella Band will only last about 4 months & women often grow to big in the belly for them.  The stores prices are pretty on par with Nordstrom & other department stores.   My suggestion is to keep an eye out for specialty stores.  You'll be more likely to find some pieces that you really like!  https://www.apeainthepod.com/ offers garments that will fit from the beginning to even after.  I honestly liked a lot of their things for even if I wasn't pregnant.  I don't plan on spending a fortune at the store but just getting some key pieces that will help me stay comfortable till this baby is here!   Congratulations to you and I wish you luck on your shopping! :D

Thanks! I found that the bella band actually hurt because it was so tight! Maybe that's why!

This!  Online has a way better selection. You can always return to a store if you don't like. Espec if you order from old navy or jcp or motherhood. Good luck!  I've loved everything I've ordered so far.

Check before you order from Old Navy because I ordered 3 things and none of them could be returned in store. I hated 2 of the things I ordered.

  • Take the plunge! You won't regret it. Plus, I find I actually look more pregnant when I wear maternity clothes. It kind of rounds out your bump if that makes sense. ;)

I would try Motherhood. Their secret belly fit panel is amazing and so comfortable.

I felt this way the first time I began looking a few weeks ago. Since then I've had better luck with Motherhood Maternity Outlet, Gap, and Old Navy... Keep looking. You'll find something you like.

  • I'm sorry it has been such a frustrating experience for you. I had to switch to maternity clothes really early and found that stores just don't carry much. I ended up trying things on for size then ordered what I liked and wanted online. That has worked much better for me.
  • Ditto everyone else re. ordering online.  I found a lot of the in-store selections to either be underwhelming (Old Navy had a tiny maternity section) or a big mess (Motherhood Maternity had so much stuff crammed into such a small space, it was really difficult to browse).  In addition to the places already mentioned, I've also heard that JC Penney's and Kohl's have good maternity sections.  I haven't been too impressed with what Ann Taylor Loft has online at the moment, but I have some really nice hand-me-down pants and sweaters from there that my sister gave me.

  • I am with you. I am also in denial and am still squeezing into my regular jeans (which are starting to give me a muffin top...not cute).

I broke down and bought a few maternity dresses, which look like normal maxi dresses and are cute with a cardigan. However, pants are a whole other issue - ewww. Why are they so ugly? I can't get past that panel thing either...

  • Yep- I am with you. I finally bought some this week because I was SO sick of being uncortable in my bella band. Now I am just uncomfortable in my maternity pants! UGH! Why do they come in S, M and L???? Why arent there longs? I would prefer a XS-long, but I had to get a S-regular so they are too short and baggy. Awesome.

This.  They have the best jeans!

The problem with old navy maternity is that in in-store maternity selection SUCKS (here, at least).  I've had a ton of luck online (with better coupon codes, too) for shirts.  I hate their pants.  I'd say the shirts run a little big (regular ON, I wear a S or M.  Maternity is pretty much always a S).  I think Target is WAY overpriced.  I got cute capris at Kohl's on sale about 2 weeks ago.  Still not super-cheap but they're cute and I plan to wear them a lot.

  • I would highly recommend consignment shops. I went to some this past weekend in my hometown and loved (and am loving as I'm super comfortable at work now) them. I think the thing I like the most is that they're all worn in already (not worn out, but I know exactly how they're going to fit when I get them home and wash them since they're already pre-loved). I just found a consignment shop sort of near work and grabbed another pair of jeans there too. I found it great to try on a bunch o brands at once since even in one size they have a huge range. I had to tell myself not to get frustrated if I tried on one size medium in one brand and they were too tight and then one from a different brand and they were too big. I ended up with 4-5 pairs of very comfortable pants, you just have to have enough time to really try them on. Having a helper is a huge benefit to grab you more stuff to try on.
  • Its annoying for sure! All my maternity clothes for this time of the year are HUGE, since DS and DD were Sept/Aug babies. I just started pulling out bigger clothes that I had in storage. However, I will say I am looking forward to fall/winter clothes since I get to go get new ones.

  • You were just unlucky, I think! I just got my order from Destination Maternity today and I LOVE everything. The tops especially look really good, even with my currently tiny bump, and since they're stretchy I think they'll work all through pregnancy and post-birth. Check out their site, there is a sale today extra 25% off red line items. Some good deals there!
  • I felt the same way when I went to Target, was really bummed out the small selection and type of clothes they had. I've had really good luck with Destination Maternity (especially the Pea in a Pod items).  I really like that they have maternity designer jeans too, they look just like the pre-pregnancy pair I have. I also have found that I have the best luck buying from them online, there is obviously a bigger selection and have found their sizing chart to be very accurate.  They are also having a big online sale right now.

Maternity jeans/pants are the best! Why don't they make regular pants with that stretchy panel?! : )

  • I enjoy the comfort of the very few maternity pants that I own however, I HATE the panels. I'm only 5 feet tall, so I'm very short and I have a short wait/torso. Those darn panels are enormous and practically cover my boobs! I always end up rolling them down because I can't stand them. I'm still using my bella band. It's not great but at least I can still wear all my old pants! I'm hoping to be in it for a few more weeks. I still have plenty of room to stretch in it.

Anyone heard of the website: emommie.com ? They sell maternity clothes discounted and they even have a pre-loved section for used maternity clothes. I just found out about it so I have yet to purchase anything through them, but I probably will! They're based out of Richmond, VA which I'm just outside of. The cool part for any Richmonders is that they have local warehouse sales and you can opt to pick up your stuff at the store to save on shipping. Just thought I'd share!

Am I the only one that did a double take on this?

Also, online shopping. Size yourself in store if you must but they (any store really) has a better selection online. And stores like JC Penny allow you to ship something to the store so you don't get charged for shipping.
