GTKY: how were you named?

We talk a lot about choosing names for our LOs, so I'm curious:

How were you named? Family names? Names with meaning? One of your parents just picked it?

Re: GTKY: how were you named?

  • When my mom was pregnant with triplets, she had three names in mind, so when she got pregnant with my sister and I, she used the names she had chosen.

My first name (Lindsay) is from the actress who was the bionic woman. haha. My middle name is my maternal grandmother's name (my twin sister's middle name is our paternal grandmother's name).

My dad named the girls, my mom named the boys. I was named after a beautiful dog that lived down the street (my name was a top 10 name the year I was born but my parents like to say it was because of the dog).  My middle name is from a musical and my dad sings me the song all the time.

  • My mom liked my name because it sounded old fashioned (Emily).  She also tried naming all her kids slightly more uncommon names.  She clearly didn't foresee my name becoming so popular in the 80s and 90s!  My middle name is Susanne, after my mom whose first name is Susan, but didn't think Emily Susan had a good ring to it.

Our LO isn't being named after anyone.  Totally from scratch.

  • I was named after my mom's favorite soap opera. There was someone on there named Taylor and my middle name is after my aunt her middle name is Rae too and so is my cousin's and now my niece has the same middle name.

  • I was named after Chrissy Snow from Three's Company.   My mom was classy like that.

  • After a Barry Manilow song.  Mandie.  I'm just glad my name isn't Lola.

  • My fn was just something they liked the sound of. My mn is also my mom's mn.
  • My name is Megan and I was named after the little girl who eventually has a creepy affair with a priest in the 80's miniseries "The Thorn Birds." haha

  • My mom named me after her favorite soap opera character from when she was a teenager.

  • My maiden name is an unusual Irish name, and we are one of only 3 or so families in the US who spell it the way we do.  That said, there was a limited quantity of names that sounded good with it.  They thought Kelly sounded good. My MN is the same as my mom's MN (Ann).  I always hated that there was no fun story/significance behind it, so DH and I agreed to give our kids family names. We love DDs name (Emilia Irene), but may very well be screwed if we have a second daughter!

  • My dad's Irish, and my mom loved Ireland, so they chose Shannon for my first name after the River Shannon in Ireland. My mom wanted my middle name to be Rae (after my aunt, Sarah Rae), but it didn't flow so they went with Renee.

  • My mom went to school with a girl named Pamela.  She thought she was beautiful and apparently admired her from afar.  (I don't think they were friends.). So she gave me that name.

  • My Dad wanted something Irish (he's 100% Irish), but they couldn't decide on a name. My great-grandmother threw out Kelly as an idea and it stuck. My MN is the same as my paternal Grandmother's middle name. We've also chosen to name both our boys something Irish and middle names after family members. I like the tradition.

  • I was named FN after my father's grandmother, she was an amazing artist, I wish I had inherited her talent for painting as well as her name! MN was after my aunt and godmother.

  • My parents were talking about names, and my sister, who was 4 said she liked the name Tiffany. My parents decided they liked it too. My 10 yr old sister gave me my middle name, Joy.

Thank goodness that sisters do better than nephews. My 6 yr old nephew wanted his aunt to name her baby Alligator, lol.

  • First name is after a TV character my parents really liked, middle name is the same as my Mom's.

  • I was named after a sweetheart of kid my mom babysat a few years before I was born.  But it also happened to be one of the peak years for my name, so it doesn't feel very exciting.  My middle name is after my paternal grandma (it turned out that I look a lot like her, which is fun).  My brother's middle name is after a maternal great-grandpa.  Our LO's mn will be Ruth after great-great grandmas on both sides.

  • Straight out of the bible. My mom liked the story of Rachel. My grandpa also used to tell me the story of how Rachel met Jacob at the well or whatever ALL THE TIME, so I think my whole family liked the name.

  • I have 3 sisters and three of us are all have first and middle names that our parents just liked, our youngest sister's FN is named after Dr. Quinn Medicine woman (Michaela) and her middle name is my grandma's name. She is the only one who was named after someone.

My BIL and SIL have 3 girls and their first names are just random, but they put a lot of thought into all of there middle names and they each have two. That just seems like a lot of thought for each child and then I start to feel bad for leaving certain family members out.

Yeah... my mom's name was super popular when she was young and she promised not to do that to her children.  So Ashley it was.  She claims she didn't know.  I guess I have to believe her.  My middle name is the female version of her nephew that passed away a few years before I was born.

This LO will be named after FIL, with the middle name either being my father's middle name or my mother's maiden name.

  • My first name was just one my parents liked.  Along with 85% of all other little girls born in 1981, i swear!  (Jennifer) My first middle name is after my aunt, and that was supposed to be it, but my great grandmother passed away two days before I was born so I got her name as a second middle name.

Then you should be Meghann! That is my SIL's name and the extra N gets people all the time. Then she tells them she was named after a character in the Thorn Birds and they ask what that is. So funny!

I was named after a chick my mom met in a bar. While pregnant with me. And underage. Lovely.

ETA: My mom liked this chicks name so much she kept the spelling too, so my name is Christen and has never been spelled correctly ever. My MN is my mom's MN.

  • My mom liked Jamie Lee Curtis.....she just did some tweaking and changed it to Jaime instead. But my full first name is Jaime Lee.

  • Mine is boring... My mom saw the movie Savannah Smiles and fell in love... MY SISTER however is more interesting. My dad when they found out they were pregnant with a girl (she's the first) Told my mom how much he always loved the name Brittany Elizabeth. My mom agreed it was pretty and was just excited that her husband was taking an interest so they went with it.

Turns out Brittany Elizabeth was my dad's first love :) fyi my parents are no longer married.

  • I was named after a town in Wyoming. My parent's were driving along and saw the sign for "Story" and pulled over, took a picture and went on their merry way. I'm pretty sure they pulled my middle name out of thin air.
  • My parents were set on Jennifer and then a few days before I was born (2 weeks early) my dad heard Melissa and loved it. He suggested it to my mom and I guess she loved it, too. MN they just liked. My mom always said she should have named me after my great grandmother and as it turns out I'm naming this little girl after her (Eliza).

  • My parents agreed on one thing with me and my sister: our first name would be Dad's choice; our middle name would be Hawaiian and Mom's choice. My dad really liked the name he picked for me, and my mom combined different names to make my middle name.

At home, I go by my middle name only; I rarely hear my first name at home. I prefer going by my middle name, but since it's Hawaiian and kinda hard to pronounce, I stick by my easier first name.

  • My dad came home from work one day and said "If it is a girl, which it isn't since we already have a girl, I want to name her Kristyn Elizabeth with a YN."  It just hit him and he knew it was what my name had to be.

  • I am sort of named after a crib...funny I know! My name is Jennifer Lynn and the crib company is Jenny Lind. My mom always wanted  Jenny Lind crib and name her first daughter (and only) Jennifer Lynn so here I am!

LO girl will be a completely not named after someone. We just loved the name. LO boy will have the same middle name as DH's first name Michael but that's it!

  • My dad's mom passed away when he was in his early 20's.  They named me (Marjorie) after her.  My old middle name was Smith which was my mom's mom's maiden name.  My family is very big about naming for a reason.

  • My mom's name is Sheryl Teresa. My Granny's name was Elsie Marie.

My dad wanted me to be named Elsie Teresa and my mom was fine with it. However, my dad wasn't there at the time and mom was living with Granny. Granny told Mom that if she named me Elsie, Granny would kick us all out.

That's how I became Teresa Marie. (I hope Granny wouldn't have actually done it...but she always hated her name)

Somehow my parents didn't talk about family names enough before I was born, so they didn't realize that they EACH already had a niece named Teresa, so I was the 2nd Teresa in each family (one 2 years older than me, the other 5). And that's why I've been called Terri since I was a tiny baby.

  • I'm not exactly sure but everyone always joked that since my name is Misty Day, it must have been a misty day when I was born.  In all honesty, I think a friend of my parents suggested it and it stuck.  My mom wanted to name me Alicia originally.

  • My mom let my brother pick out my first name. He was into the movie Alice In Wonderland, but the way he said it it came out Allison Wonderland. My dad picked out my middle name after an aunt on his side.

Anything but boring! I would be pissed to find out later in life that my DH named our daughter after his first love without telling me.

ETA: just realized that is your sister's name. Crazy story!

Apparently lots of moms were into naming kids based on actresses or characters. :)
