Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 mo LO still not into finger foods or Stage 3 food...

I've been trying to introduce some finger foods--Cheerios, banana pieces, chunks of avocado, chunks of cooked apple, teething biscuits, yogurt melts--but so far DS is really not interested other than to push his hand from side to side and send everything flying onto the floor.  If I put it into his mouth he might chew on it, but it's a pretty comical expression that he gets and it's rather painstaking to get him to eat anything other than his Stage 2 baby food with cereal.

I also tried to feed him some Stage 3 food which is of course much chunkier than he is used to and the poor little thing choked so much that it was obvious his gag reflux just isn't ready yet.  DC recommended mixing some of the Stage 3 with the Stage 2 (duh, don't know why I didnt think of that, to take it slow) to see if he can tolerate that so I think I will do that.

I'm sure this is all normal and we just had our 9 mo appt. with the pedi last week and they did recommend a list of table foods to start introducing but no real help on how to get him interested.  I'm thinking it will just happen in its own time but just wondering what others' experiences are?

  • My daughter's been starting with table food for a bit now but I will say that she hates stage 3. I think that she was expecting her regular smooth puree and the chunkier version was not her style. I really think that she just wanted to feed herself vs having a spoon with chunky bits shoved in her mouth.

Try some bits of toast or  a waffle or maybe the puffs. Put some in front of him and let him play with them -maybe show him by example to put the food in his mouth and chew. I also find that if I give DD the table food first and then follow up with a puree she is nice and full and happily eats.

Just keep trying everyday and be consistent. He will start to try things littel by little..especially when he sees it is a normal part of his day.

  • I wouldn't worry too much. We were in the same situation when DS was 9 months and he would just make a mess and didn't show ANY interest in learning how to pick up food and eat it. It was almost like he would put everything except food in his mouth. One day I sat down at the table with a bunch of cheerios and we worked on it for some time. After that, he had the skill down! Now I have to make sure he isn't attempting to eat non food items such as an occasional bug he finds.

  • My LO never liked purees so we did BLW. She just refused to be spoonfed and wanted to feed herself, but usually her idea of feeding herself is mostly just playing with her food. She is not that interested yet. We still continue to offer her new things so she has practice eating solids, but we are not worried since she still has plenty of time to learn how to eat solids.

I have had the most success with hummus on pita bread, avacodo, blueberries, baked sweet potato slices, and Lil' crunchies puffs by Gerber.
