Getting preggo while on progesterone

Just curious as to if any of you got pregnant while taking progesterone for regulating your period.  I stopped taking the pill on Nov 3rd of last year and got my periods on Nov 7th,Dec 7th, and January 27th.  After that I wasn't getting any periods and the doc started me on Progesterone on June 12th for 10 days and I got my period on June 24th which made me very happy that my body responded to it.  The Doc told me that if I don't get my period again in 6 weeks by myself after day 1 of my period then I need to do another cycle of it.  6 weeks will be this coming Sunday (August 5th) and I haven't gotten anything yet.  We are obviously trying to conceive and the doc knows that and she said that some women actually need to stay on progesterone until they either get preggo or want to go back on the bc.  I have posted on the TTC boards but just thought I'd give this a shot and ask how many of you actually conceived while using progesterone for your cycles and for advice!! Thanks!! :)

  • Provera is used generally for a 10 day dose to induce a period.

Progesterone suppositories (sometimes oral pills) are sometimes used in early pregnancy if you are shown to have low levels.

You don't "stay on" progesterone to conceive.

  • The medication that I was on to induce my period was called Progesterone(aka prometrium) and I was on it for 10 days.  The gyno told me that some women have to keep taking it multiple times to induce their period until they get pregnant if they are not getting their period on their own every 6 weeks.  Like if I have to go on it again in another week, I go and take a pregnancy test at the doctors and then if it's not positive then I will start the dose over again to induce another period.

If you constantly have to take it to induce your period, I would start looking into why you aren't getting a period on your own.

  • I have a follow up with her in October regardless if I get it on my own or not.  I thought the same thing as to how they can just keep someone on progesterone until they either get pregnant or decide to go back on bc (if you aren't trying to conceive) Odd...
  • I believe that progesterone supplements can actually prevent ovulation if you keep taking them without any break.  Something to keep in mind.

  • I got pregnant after 6 months of inducing my period with provera (each time 10 days) and 4 months of Clomid after (I wasn't ovulating on my own)  I actually was on provera again the week before I found out I was pregnant because I had gotten a negative pregnancy test at the doctors on a day I should have had a positive.  Now I am 6 weeks pregnant!  Good luck.

  • Thanks ladies! That's good to hear MrsSewall! Congrats! :)  That was a nice start to the day hearing that! Good luck to you, hope everything goes smooth!
  • I wasn't making enough progesterone on my own (as evidenced by a mid-luteal prog. of 4.6) and DH and I had been TTC for 5 months. So the sixth month I watched my temps/cervical mucus/and OPKs and started progesterone vaginal suppositories (Crinone to be exact) two days after ovulation. Got my BFP the very first time! I am still on the suppositories until 12 weeks.

P.S. I also used Preseed lubricant during BDing for the first time that month and I truly believe that helped.

    Good luck!!!
