baby shower gift?

going to a shower next month and Im torn between getting them something fun and unique or sometihng usefule from the registry...I was so grateful for all the useful items we were gifted but also loved the fun stuff like skull shoes and onesies or tattoo styel bibs etc... If it were you what road would you go?? what to do what to do LOL Its their first child.

If they have specific cute clothing picked out, my vote is for that. We had some cute clothes on our registry that were unique, and noone got them. I don't know if they thought we were just selecting general categories or if they wanted to pick out something cute themselves. I wish someone had gotten the clothes I specifically asked for though.

Useful items are also more appreciated than something general. She'll get a ton of cute general category clothes, but she'll only need 1 stroller (for example). I loved when people got me some of the specialty items because it was less we had to buy ourselves. Plus we ended up with too many clothes for DS to realistically wear before he outgrew them.

The first time around I appreciated the useful items far more than the unique things. I understand that some people don't like to shop from registries, and that's fine since it's a gift. However, the things on the registry were things we would need which meant less we'd have to buy later.

Yesterday I saw on 8moms.com they have diaper sample pack which I thought were an awesome idea. There's a bunch of different types and each type has 3 diapers in it (36 diapers total). I've never seen it before so I think its a unique, definitely useful and seems like a great shower gift. I also posted yesterday on the Feb 2013 board if you wanna go read that post I wrote a little more info there.

ETA: If I were attending a shower I would probably go with the diaper sample pack and something useful of the registry. I really liked the fact that I got almost everything purchased off mine and realistically people are always going to go off and buy their own things and not even glance at the registry.

I love making diaper cakes for showers now. Diapers are the #1 necessary thing for moms (unless they are cloth diapering of course), so I put fun things on the cake to make it both useful and fun. It's really great to customize to the recipient as well. :-)

I agree functional / off registry is ideal for a first baby.

2nd babies are fun to get unique gifts for. By then Mom might have lots of hand me downs all ready, or developed a brand preference, so the unique gift is fun.

thanks for the input. we didnt really have to buy any big items ourselves so we were very lucky. I guess that means Im going with useful and maybe a small fun item
