For those who took shorter maternity leaves

Re: For those who took shorter maternity leaves

  • I took 4.5 with #2 and my friend (self employed) took about 1 week with each of her children!  I never got flack.  You do what you have to do.  You have to provide for your family.  I received zero pay while on leave, so no I didn't take the full 12.

  • My leave is completely unpaid, and I have to start back with my work around 6 weeks or we would be in serious financial trouble.  I might have to start adding hours back in around 4 weeks, but that depends on a few different factors.

Would I love more time? Sure, if only because I don't want to put LO in daycare so early (no family around that is available, they all work).  But personally/professionally I feel I would be ok going back that early.  I also don't have a choice financially.

I originally planned to take eight weeks but ended up taking six. I could really only afford eight to begin with...but the real reason I went back so soon is because I work with kids who are going through a rough time and they need an advocate. That kind of work never really stops or slows down. I was able to bring my LO with me for a while, and still can if I really need too. I was able to transition him into daycare easily.

I only caught flack from one friend. I ignored it. I did what was best for my family and my job (which is linked into my family's well being as well). All families are different and I think that should be accounted for no matter what their choice is when it comes to situations like this.
