Babies: 3 - 6 Months

*SHOTZIE nuts and baby's gas suggestion. Thank you!!

After my post the other day with the give your baby coke in her bottle advice, you mentioned that nuts can cause an issue.

This is possibly TMI but, I've been eating nuts daily as a snack for the last couple of months. LO got pretty gassy, as did I. It seemed logical that if I was gassy then it could be something I was eating that was causing LO to be gassy. BUT I attributed it to the prunes was eating to ensure regularity, and as my hemmies have been brutal I wasn't willing to give them up.

Anyway after you talked about the nuts, I realised that the nuts and prunes had become a regular feature of my diet at the same time. So it was eay to drop the nuts out.

My gassiness cleared up within a day.

LO improved, and now within 2 or 3 days she's back to normal. Sleeping well, her eczema is clearer and she's my happy little girl again.

Thank you so much!!!

ETA: Do you happen to know if it's the protein in the nuts that is the issue or if it's some other aspect to them? Also do seeds have the same issue? I suppose I'm just thinking about getting the nutrient that nuts provide from elsewhere.

  • Yay, I'm glad it helped! I'm not sure what aspect of nuts causes the gassiness...are they high in fiber...? I took DD2 to the allergist a few weeks ago and she tested allergic to cashews. I'd been eating walnuts with my oatmeal every morning and cutting those out cleared her eczema and gas. We'll see what her tests show down the road as far as nuts go. For now, I'm avoiding all nuts. I do eat sunflower seeds every day and I don't notice excess gas from them in me or DD2.

  • Yes I eat sunflower seeds everyday too, which is what made me ask.

Also, do you happen to know if this kind of reaction to nuts now means she may be more likely to have a nut allergy when she moves onto solids? We don't have nut allergies in the family.

    Thanks

  • I really don't know. DH and I don't have food allergies, but our LO's do. I read that if you have any type of allergy (seasonal/animal/food), your kids are more likely to have allergies of some sort. A parent may have seasonal allergies, but their child has food allergies, for example. Also, allergies, eczema, and asthma often go together. I would let your pedi know about the nut/eczema connection you discovered. You might want to have your LO see an allergist at some point before introducing nuts to her diet. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. The allergy and eczema world is very confusing and everyone seems to have different opinions and advice!

  • Thanks for that. No one has any allergies, but DH did have asthma as a kid.

I'll bring it up next month at her well child check-up.
