Pretty sure nobody in this thread said that there is no risk to vaccinating whatsoever.
Just that the risk of a serious side effect from vaccines is much smaller than the risks associated with these vaccine-preventable diseases that are on the rise.

Perhaps not those words exactly but replies like this aren't exactly helpful if someone is concerned about potential risks: "Don't be an idiot. By the time your kid is old enough to make his/her own decision about vaccinating (FFS), he/she could be dead or disabled. Get your kid the motherfcuking shots."

It's insulting, fear-mongering, and dismissive of people's legitimate concerns about safety. It does nothing to help promote vaccination. There are ways to promote vaccination without insulting anyone who questions the process.

I am such a lurker on this board but I just wanted to point out that *I* was asked to get two vaccines before leaving the birth center with my newborn. They wanted me to be vaccinated against pertussis and the flu. They also recommended that anyone who would be near my LO in those first weeks be vaccinated against those as well, so my husband and mother also went to have those shots asap.

This exactly... It was NBD but if we DIDN'T get the shots, it very well could have been.

I'm pretty certain that there were more "MY baby might die if yours gets sick!" comments. Most pertussis deaths are infants younger than the recommended vaccination age. (In fact, all 10 of the recent pertussis deaths around here were newborns).

This is just one of the decisions you will have to make as a mom. Good luck with whatever you decide.

There are clearly two opposing views on this issue and each side has personal or research based reasons to back up their opinions. I also want to research vaccines to be sure that the benefits of each one outweigh the risks. It seems obvious that it's my role as a parent to do so. It's unfortunate that people choose to spout of sarcastic rants rather than contribute legitimate, mature input (thanks to those who do!). A staggering fact for me is that in 1980 the vaccine schedule listed 11 shots by 18mos. and now it's up to 23. I'm interested in getting good answers on why all the new shots have been introduced as well as looking into when is the best time to give certain vaccines. For example: HepB is mostly transmitted by sexual activity and needle sharing....2 activities my infant will not be partaking in. So, it would seem smart to wait until my child is of school age, when possible bodily fluid contact with an infected person may be more likely since my child will be at an age of having open scrapes, etc and HepB has no cure so risking infection is serious. But a possible side effect of the vaccine for HepB is liver damage, which is what the actual disease causes, which we're asked to vaccinate against. That's a lot of info that can sometimes conflict itself, which is why I'm choosing to learn about vaccines before blindly opting for them....it's not like parents who are open to delaying the schedule or refusing certain vaccines aren't educating themselves prior for the best interests of their children. That's what all parents are ultimately after right?

alimaried, the problem with parents trusting their own research is that most of us aren't equipped to correctly interpret the data, or differentiate strong scientific evidence from weak or refuted scientific evidence. For example, you seem to misunderstand why the HepB vax is given to infants (and how infants contract the disease).

I finally figured out why I'm fat...it's vaccines I received 31 years ago. Thank goodness it has nothing to do with PCOS or eating all that ice cream.

There are a ton of chemicals that people put in one's body without knowing it....pink slime anyone? We have become a society of convenience, hence the McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Hardee's, Sonic's, Five Guys, White Castle, Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Papa John's, etc, etc etc on every corner of the universe. What about artificial sweeteners? Or maybe just maybe it's because things are better diagnosed from a medical standpoint.

Have you ever thought that there have been breakthroughs in the medical community? Chickenpox and HPV vaxes are new since I was a kid. I'm sure there are more. I hope there are more to come, HIV is one that comes to mind. Scientifically, we have made great strides as a society to stop these diseases.

I have a coworker whose family doesn't vax nor does she. She always asks who got their flu shot though (I think to discuss how evil it is) and I always tell her you are welcome (like she would ever say thank you).

I am really interested to know where I can find more information. I, myself, refuse any immunizations or vaccinations. I would like to do the same for my child until they can make their own choices...but which ones can I say no to and which ones are important? I know schools won't let children attend without updated shot records...What do I do there? Any advice on this topic will be greatly appreciated as I am 100% in the dark.

Yes. Muffin. that's called progress. one day I hope there are 50 shots. And I'd line up for every one. Can we prevent breast cancer? Brain cancer? multiple sclerosis? Give my kid those shots too.

In 32 years I hope to god we have 30 more vaccines in the name of science, progress, and public health.

I laugh at the idea that more vaccines = some ridiculous government conspiracy and not just good sense.

You may want to look into picking up a book called "Well Adjusted Babies," the holistic alternative to " What To Expect When You Are Expecting." Uber informative and I wish someone had told me about it before my LO was almost a year old. It's a bit pricey but it's worth every penny.

On a sidenote....We did the Hep B shot at birth and the 2 month shots and then we did the Dtap at 6 months. We are now no longer vaccinating and I wish we hadn't even started.
