Pregnant after IF

What would PAIF do? Job related

I know I'm over thinking this and it's a little premature but I like to pretend I'm ready for the possibilities.

Not letting IF get in the way of my normal life, I applied for an internal job. It's somewhat of a small promotion. So far, I've gotten good reviews and tons of encouragement from my peers. I think the interview went well. And I'm hearing there's a good chance I'll  get one of the open positions. Here's the but - I'm just a little over 5 weeks now and my first ultrasound is over a week away. Last time no hb developed. They should be making announcements some time next week (before u/s day).

If I do get the job, should I let them know I'm pregnant right away? Or should I wait until after first tri? It's a large company and I'm staying in the same department. There's no shortage of coverage. Im leaning towards not saying anything, in case it turns out like the last time. But I also don't want to come off like I hid this from them as I move into a new job. Wwyd?

  • I would wait until after 1st tri. At that point, tell them, and if you are comfortable mention that you'd had previous issues and wanted to wait to say something.

This!  You definitely do not need to tell them now.  Even though they legally can't hold being pregnant against you, I worked in HR and I know that once a hiring manager knows this information they still have it in the back of their minds when making a decision and it could hurt you.

Good luck!  I hope you get the job!

  • One of the best quotes relating to this kind of issue I've heard is "Your family planning is not their business."  Any number of things could happen/change, none of which is relevant to the position.  From my perspective, you finish the process, accept the job, and announce at an appropriate stage (and it doesn't even have to be post-first tri, you could wait until you're 20 weeks or later, whatever is comfortable for your family).

They can't legally penalize you once you have the job, but they could certainly find a reason not to give you the job in the first place.

  • It may feel disengenuous not letting them know, but it really is no one's business but your own right now, especially being in the early stages. No reasonable person would think anything is off about waiting until things are settled both with the job promotion and your pregnancy.

I struggled with this too. I had my ET 2 days before my first day on a brand new job, a job I had interviewed for and accepted before I dove into my IVF cycle rather unexpectedly. My first 3 months were on a temp/contract basis, so I kept my condition to myself until I was sure I would be staying in the position and when I felt I had a reasonable chance of a healthy pregnancy. So, I waited until I was about 20 weeks along before having "the talk" with my boss.

I was really nervous about having the conversation, but I kept it professional and everyone seemed genuinely happy for me.

  • If you were further along, I think you'd have to tell. However, being only five weeks, I don't think you should because you never know what might happen.

  • I would wait. I didn't tell my co-workers until I was 14 weeks. Just in case something happened.. I didn't want to have to explain to everyone why I was no longer pregnant if god forbid anything happened.

  • I'd Walt till 2nd.  U have no obligation to tell them earlier.  My boss onbvioisly knows I'm pregnant, but i still haven't told human resources.  I work for a huge company, and my leave has no impact on them.

  • I was awarded an internal job promotion during my 1st tri.  I kept everything to myself until 15wks.  I didn't want to have to 'un-tell'.  My management team was very understanding when I did finally tell them.  I let them know that I had faith in the integrity of the hiring process and that I didn't feel like telling them would have jeopardized my opportunity in getting the position, but that this was a difficult pregnancy with early complications and I wasn't comfortable telling people at that point.  It was a great conversation and they were happy that I did decide to tell them when I did.  There were absolutely no hard feelings about holding the information back until I was ready.

    GL!

Definitely don't tell.  I just went through the same thing, and was 4 months (but not showing) when I interviewed/received the offer.  I got the job and started at 5 months, and was showing by then.  Everyone has been really great about me starting the job being pregnant.  My hiring manager even specifically said that she doesn't like to be told personal things like that in an interview because it is so hard to not consider that information.

GL - I hope you get the job!
