High-Risk Pregnancy

Hashimoto's ...let's talk

Well, my six week pp blood test results came back as feared, my extreme hyperthyroidism during pregnancy is Hashimoto's disease. I'm waiting to get in with an Endocrinologist but am wondering for those who have it- have you gotten pregnant after being put on the meds? And were you able to breastfeed on the meds? I have a 7 week old that I am breastfeeding and am scared I will have to stop once they put me on the medication. Also, 3 babies was always in the plan but now wonder if that is not going to be an option because of this...will I have to go untreated for awhile to try for a third? Please tell me about your experiences, I am completely naive about this.

  • Well I have hashimoto's hypothyroidism and am pregnant. If the meds they are treating you with are for HYPERthyroidism, you probably can't breastfeed or conceive while you are on them (but my understanding is that you aren't on these drugs long-term).

For hypothyroidism, you will most likely need a thyroid replacement hormone like Synthroid (levothyroxine) every day for the rest of your life. This drug mimics natural hormones in the body and is not only safe during, before, and after pregnancy, but is necessary. Many women have trouble conceiving because they have hypothyroidism that is undiagnosed and untreated. If you take your medication and your Dr follows your blood levels regularly, there is no reason why this would cause you to be unable to have more kids in the future. It's a very common condition that is easily managed (and the drugs aren't even that expensive (around $25 a month full price for the name brand).

  • I have hypothyroidism and got pregnant on 150mcg of synthesis.  Once your thyroid is regulated the possibility of conceiving is improved.  Going to an endo will put you in the right direction.

I have had hypo/hashimoto's for seven years now. I was diagnosed shortly after I had my first child.  I started out on 25 mcgs and had to double during my second pregnancy. I have stayedo n 50 thereafter and before/during this pregnancy. Once it is regualted --there should be no problem conceiving because of that.

Also I breastfed dc#2 until she was 2 years old.

  • This is my 8th pregnancy! Ive had 6 miscarrages and 1 child who is now 10. I have hashimotos and severe hypothyroid. I also have pulminary hypertension and a few other serious medical conditions. The doctors tell me the only reason Ive made it to 10 weeks with this pregnancy is because they finally diagnosed the thyroid issues and have controlled them. From what Ive learned the most important thing is to have your levels checked often (until stable) and to take brand name meds. The generic makes it too hard to keep you at a stable level. So getting pregnant on the meds should be no issue and as for breastfeeding I was told that is not an issue either. I believe being untreated is the real issue when it comes to thyroid problems!! Find a good doctor and good luck!!
