Washing out baby's mouth?

Do you wash out your babies mouth after every feed?  I was told to do this just today (and haven't been doing it at all so far). Is everyone doing this?  Problem is I'm feeding him to sleep a lot of the time and don't really want to wake him up by shoving a washcloth in his mouth :/

Advice?

  • I've never done/been told to do this.  If you want to do it, I definitely would NOT wake him to do it!

  • I have never done this and I have never heard of doing it either.  I definitely wouldn't wake a baby to do it either.

  • I've never done that.  I have heard of wiping their gums with a clean cloth before they have teeth, but I don't think it'd be for babies that young, and definitely not after every feeding.  That's a little strange to me.

  • How do you wash a baby's mouth out? I've heard of wiping gums/teeth, but never washing a mouth out. At his age I wouldn't worry about it. Who gave you this advice?
  • I wipe my LOs mouth out with a wash cloth usually twice a day. I just do it when I wash his face in the morning and before bed when I wash his face. I cover my finger with the cloth first and give a little wipe to his gums young and cheeks. Them wash that face

  • Every time seems excessive and there is no way I would wake my son for that. Who gave this advice and was there some special reason why?

  • For formula fed babies you're supposed to wipe their mouth/teeth clean after feeding because formula sugars will rot teeth. Breastfed babies don't need that. In fact my son has all his teeth now and even though he eats actual foods (including sugar) and nurses to sleep his teeth are fine, because breastmilk helps protect them.

  • It was the lactation support lady at my WIC office which is why I thought there might be some credibility to what she was saying...  Well thanks, glad I'm not alone in thinking "hell no"

  • Yeah, that seems pretty ridiculous to me. It seems to me that constantly putting a washcloth in their mouth would actually introduce MORE germs and problems for the baby.

Women at WIC deal with a LOT of formula fed infants. (That's not a problem, it's just that FF and BF infants need different things) So she's probably just getting her information mixed up... Or she just figured it's not going to hurt breastfed infants so she's including it in her advice to breastfeeding mothers too so what she tells mother's is more uniform.
