I am not sure who is dumber, the poster who said people shouldn't fundraise for adoption or those of you who are happy about our healthcare. Wow. I guess ignorance still abounds.
I'm not knowledgeable enough in politics to debate the entire healthcare issue..but I am someone who has personally benefited from Obamacare. I've had top of the line insurance coverage for the past year thanks to being able to pay into my Dad's plan until I'm 26. So, for me it's been a real blessing...and by the way, I'm not dumb.
I take it KS3PINK has never had to try and buy healthcare on her own, and been denied because of migraines or any other reason. I know a person who was denied because she had ?lumpy? breast and had a risk factor for breast cancer.
While I think that there are good parts and bad parts. I don?t believe in denying someone healthcare because of a ?pre-exciting? condition.

I do consider myself relatively knowledgeable in politics because I've spent my entire career as a SAHM listening to almost nothing but NPR all day. We don't have tv at our house so we get all our news from radio(npr) and internet(where we can choose what to consume).
We have also benefited directly from the health care changes. My husband and I were able to get marriage counseling through our insurance for a small co-pay. Before the ACA marriage counseling wasn't covered at all and we would have had to pay entirely out of pocket, which was completly unaffordable to us.
I am an independant and agree with positions on both side of the aisle. I didn't vote for Obama but I really like the guy.
Also, I agree that it's been hacked up but that is because no one can agree and the fact that this man was able to get it passed in the first place is a freaking miracle. Unless you'd like to pay more in taxes covering overpriced emergency care for the uninsured.
While I don't really agree with all aspects of obamacare, It was actually pointed out on NBC'S coverage on the ruling that there are not penalties if you choose not to pay the penalty for not having insurance... so I dunno how much that is actually going to change.
My UO is I don't think I'm getting a work shower and it makes me a little sad. I only work with 5 other people so it's not like I was expecting tons of gifts, but I don't even think they are getting me one gift.
Can I share this one with you? Several people at work have mentioned at some point putting something together (and getting my hopes up), but have not followed through. And my boss asked me about when I wanted to go to lunch with our team to celebrate the baby, but then added that it's for a bunch of peoples' birthdays, too, so the day I suggested didn't work because one of the birthday people can't come. My office used to do full-blown showers and have even gotten huge gifts for 2nd (and 3rd) babies, but I guess they just don't anymore.
I've participated in a million office baby showers in the past dozen years. And I wasn't working in an office when I got engaged and married, so I guess I just had the expectation (especially since several people had mentioned it) that something would come together for this occasion and I was really looking forward to it. Damn expectations--they'll get you every time!

Well another UO and I am leaving the political debates alone . . . I do not like the way Obama has served as a president. I don't feel like he is a leader that he had so much potential and support to be! Instead he acts more like a celebrity. I also don't see the point in him appearing on late night tv . . . there are more important issues to focus on . . . . done leaving the politics alone.
I am not sure who is dumber, the poster who said people shouldn't fundraise for adoption or those of you who are happy about our healthcare. Wow. I guess ignorance still abounds.
is this for real? name calling doesn't do you any justice, my dear, especially coming from someone who believes that homosexuality is a choice.

Um... most politicians show up on late night TV. That's the way our campaigns have gone. You might want to google how many times McCain went on Leno or Letterman (or my favorite The View!). If you don't go on these shows (whether you are a republican or a democrat), you are seen as being out of touch or above the "average" person. How else will you appeal to 20 somethings or housewives? (Bonus points if you were on Oprah! Both W and Gore did it in 2000 before the election! Heck, Ah-nold announced his candidacy for CA governor on Leno!)
And was finding the person(s) actually responsible for 9/11 not enough?

I respect your point of view and see where you are coming from. Let me say . . . I don't see the point in any elected officials republican/democrat/governer/whatever doing this. I don't care for the entire process we have going in America today, it is based way too much on media and not issues and resolutions.
And was finding the person(s) actually responsible for 9/11 not enough?
I think that was a great day for Americans, our Armed Services especially and I am sure it was very difficult decision for him to make as international relations were a potentional fallout, but I still have my opinion overall, albeit unpopular.

It's not my "point of view", it's an electoral fact. How else are you going to get elected? You need to pander to the public, whether you're doing it on TV or at rallies. There's a whole literature in political science today about the effects of celebrity endorsements or (my favorite) the Daily Show/Colbert Report effect. I also think that it isn't just an American phenomenon (the 24 hour news cycle/effects of the media) but that you see it in all developed countries as well.
My point was in reference to already "elected officials". I agree you have to get out there and the media is one way to do it but I feel our officials could do a better job choosing how to do so. A five minute blurb on a talk show doesn't show me much about the candidate . . . . but since you mentioned it . . . Oprah . . .now she has some grilling power! hehe

Well and most other countries (or at least in Europe) that are close-ish to how we operate are pretty much the same. One of the biggest problems is getting that 18-25 vote. I get so furious with people who don't vote yet complain (not saying anyone here does this) and if Letterman is going to inspire someone to vote, let him do it. I also think moving with the times is one way to keep with it rather that using antiquated methods that don't work.

Oh you would be dead wrong there. Private insurance for me would run well over 1000 bucks a month. That is why I went tp school and got a good job with good benefits. We will see if you all are still so happy when your taxes go sky high and you have to travel out of the country for emergency surgery. Do your research, I did a paper on Denmark's healthcare and intervewed people living there when I was in college. It is terrible. And when your baby is sick and can't be seen for days, yeah you will hate "Obamacare".
I don't get OWN but it still isn't the same . . . the rare times I am home in the evenings it is like 3hours of news and bad talk shows just not the same!
I'm only halfway through the excerpt from Rielle Hunter's book published in this week's People magazine - not sure I can choke down the rest of it. I certainly hope she didn't think this book would make people like or side with her. I am so disgusted by her flippant disregard for marriage and refusal to take any responsibility for John Edwards' broken relationship with his WIFE. She is begging for people to respect her - ironic, I've never felt less respect for two people. Totally sickened.

I am sick to death of seeing her face in magazines and on television. She needs to go away.
People who post at least 2-3 pictures of their baby EVERY day on Facebook drives me nuts... Especially when it's just the same pose over and over again.

Somebody's been listening to Rush.
My parents are self employed, have been since I was a baby. My Dad runs the shop, he has less than 5 employees. My mom is a homemaker and cares for her brain damaged, paralyzed mom (my grandma), who lives with them. They also support my two youngest sisters who live at home while they go to college full time on scholorships and pell grants.
My dad has insurance thru something like Blue Cross Blue Shield and has it only because he hasn't been to the doctor in decades so has no documented pre existing conditions.
My mom can't even get catastrophic insurance because she has a history of high blood pressure and once went to the hospital for chest pains. She was on Medishare for a while but they wouldn't cover the chest pains because they called it anxiety, so she was out the entire hospital bill anyway. Catastrophic insurance would be thousands of dollars a month for her.
My dad works HARD, he has a thriving business, and he rarely takes a day off. They are lower middle class, making between 40-50 thousand a year, usually.
I can't wait for my mom to be able to have health insurance.

Oh, ks3pink, why do you make it so easy?
Not everyone can go to school. Yes, I am a first generation college graduate with a good job, but you have to realize how college is not an opportunity afforded to everyone, based on their own unique circumstances.
I also think you need to realize that the Affordable Care Act isn't turning our system into socialized medicine. There are a ton of steps that our health care system would have to go through to get to Canada's or the UK's or Sweden's. That is hardly a fair comparison. If you want to keep using these doomsday scenarios, go for it, but that isn't what the Affordable Care Act is about, nor is it the system it creates.
I went to college as a teen mom on a full scholarship. Don't tell me college is not an option for everybody. Where there's a will there's a way!
Also I don't think that everyone who can't afford their own health insurance is poor and uneducated, I'm just saying that those are the people who are going to cost us with this policy, the ones who refuse to try.

The American Public is already supporting the ones "refusing to try" with programs already in place. The very poor, the ones that don't work by either choice or inability are already covered by Medicaid. Nothing is changing there.

But now there will be more. Those who didn't quite qualify for Medicaid will now have coverage and that is going to add to the patient load exponentially. Hopefully we will get the change we need in November (not that I am all for Romney) but Obama has got to go before this craziness can take effect.

Please excuse my 'ignorance', but using 'the bible says so' as your only reason for believing that homosexuality is a sin and a choice sounds a lot like going with what you've been told rather than seeking out the truth for yourself.
The Bible is the truth, its God's word, and its sad that you don't see that.

geez, i wonder why very little gets accomplished in our political system? oh yeh, because THIS is how people "debate" in this country now.
very useful and engaging comments ks3pink. almost makes me change my mind on obamacare. nope, nope, actually it doesn't.

Wait....I used to be catholic and now am considering the Episcopal church who accepts gays and women aren't second class citizens. Whose Bible interpretation is "truth"? And what happens to teen moms who can't go home crying to mommy to help with childcare? Whose own mother can't be trusted with a baby? How does this girl go to college when the funding for her school district doesn't cover the material she needs to see to excel at entrance exams? How does this girl get anywhere? Who gets insurance for her and her child? I'm guessing mommy and daddy helped you a lot.

My point was that if you want something bad enough you can do it, some way some how. As for the religion comment I think that was discussed weeks ago, not starting that again.

i had no idea. i'm completely new to the pink-fest. it was entertaining for while, but, i agree. i think the one adventure was enough.
...but it does remind me of my favorite story from the bible.
you know, the one where god said to the people who disagreed with him, "you're dumb", let me tell you how great I am and what i've overcome and have no compassion for anyone and then he rested or something.

Another UO: I totally think that ks3pink says most of the stuff she does because she gets off on getting flamed.
Agreed.
Nope. I have my beliefs and values just like everyone else and have just as much right to voice them. I also hate that people don't do their own research on things, they listen to what others think and don't think it through for themselves.
'I also hate that people don't do their own research on things, they listen to what others think and don't think it through for themselves.'
Believing everything that the bible says without question = listening to what others think without thinking it through for yourself.
It goes both ways, even for devout Christians.
zing! winner, winner, chicken dinner!

The best part is Anderson explaining to this woman that putting gays behind fences until they die out will not solve the "problem" of homosexuality since HETEROSEXUALS are the ones giving birth to gays lol.
yeh, well, i'd like to see anderson conduct this interview once he's put behind the electric fence
good gravy this was painful.

Not that I have EVER read the Bible but isn?t it a sin to have sex before marriage? If she is a teen mom, doesn?t that (most likely) mean that she had sex before marriage?Doesn?t that put her in the same class as gays?
Oh yeah and?.I am quite lucky my parents ?chose? not to have health insurance for themselves because I may have not eaten or had a home if they had it.

I'm sorry it's all my fault! I just didn't like being on the receiving end of childish name calling. And once she brings up that "truth" BS I have to bite, I just have to. I won't let it happen again!

I went to college and got thrown out because my scholarship fund ran out. My parents could not afford to keep me going. I got a crap job and started saving money. In that time, I got no health insurance. I got a slightly better job as a nanny and still had no insurance. When I got sick, I paid out of pocket when I had money and went to the ER when I had no money and ended up with a huge bill I could not pay. It took years to be able to pay it off and tax payers had to pay for it in the mean time....that's what no one understands. I have since gone to college and managed to find a job and life in which I get benefits but I had NO HELP from my parents. Even though I got there, it was a long hard road and I would have loved a little help. And yea, it was more or less a choice of eating and health insurance.

Ugh. No kidding. I wish I could just walk away from her posts but it's hard to believe that kind of thinking runs rampant in our society.
It's good for me to see though. I live in my safe liberal little bubble in a very diverse neighborhood in the city. I work in a very liberal and diverse suburb and we are all so precious and left-wing it's hard to imagine where the other side comes from. I spend my days around NPR devotees who love the sound of Ira Glass's voice--although I personally can't stand This American Life--and I really like to pretend the rest of the world is like that.
Re: ~ UO ~
I take it KS3PINK has never had to try and buy healthcare on her own, and been denied because of migraines or any other reason. I know a person who was denied because she had ?lumpy? breast and had a risk factor for breast cancer.
While I think that there are good parts and bad parts. I don?t believe in denying someone healthcare because of a ?pre-exciting? condition.
I'm not dumb, either.
While I don't really agree with all aspects of obamacare, It was actually pointed out on NBC'S coverage on the ruling that there are not penalties if you choose not to pay the penalty for not having insurance... so I dunno how much that is actually going to change.

I think that was a great day for Americans, our Armed Services especially and I am sure it was very difficult decision for him to make as international relations were a potentional fallout, but I still have my opinion overall, albeit unpopular.
Agreed!
I don't get OWN but it still isn't the same . . . the rare times I am home in the evenings it is like 3hours of news and bad talk shows just not the same!
Proud Mama to cleft cutie
I am sick to death of seeing her face in magazines and on television. She needs to go away.
Blah.
KS3PINK it's sad that you think that anyone who has to buy heath insurance out of pocket is uneducated and must not have a good job.
KLILLEY I can't wait for your mom to to have health insurance!
I think you hit the nail on the head with that observation, C_mo!

Nope. I have my beliefs and values just like everyone else and have just as much right to voice them. I also hate that people don't do their own research on things, they listen to what others think and don't think it through for themselves.
The Bible is the truth, its God's word, and its sad that you don't see that.
wow. i'm just reading down the thread and got to this little gem. i can't wait to read the posts about it. gonna go get a snack and come back.
geez, i wonder why very little gets accomplished in our political system? oh yeh, because THIS is how people "debate" in this country now.
very useful and engaging comments ks3pink. almost makes me change my mind on obamacare. nope, nope, actually it doesn't.
wow. you guys are kind. i came up with about 12 other reasons why should would have made this comment.
...but, i'm going to use a tactic that i learned here on the the bump.....
"oh bless her heart."
Bug Meets World
i had no idea. i'm completely new to the pink-fest. it was entertaining for while, but, i agree. i think the one adventure was enough.
...but it does remind me of my favorite story from the bible.
