STM: disposable burp/lap/changing pads

I got an immense amount of disposable burp/lap/changing pads at my shower. I'm contemplating returning them because with any of the babies I've babysat, I've never used them. I know it may be different when it is your own child because when you're babysitting, you don't really see the amount the baby goes through in a day. Do I really need these? He has about twenty receiving blankets, so I figured it'd be easiest to just use those to lay under him to change him or to use to burp him. Not to mention, it seems really wasteful.

I have never heard of those, but it seems wasteful to me, too, and I would probably return them for something else. I always had a few burp cloths/muslins around to wipe up spit up, lay under ds if I was changing him or wanted something to cover my lap, etc.  They worked just fine!

  • You mean those thicker ones? Almost like what the crib pads are made of? I only kept maybe one pack of the smallest size (I think maybe 15inx15in) and kept one of the changing table to catch any messes.

I have 4 of the next size up, maybe 2ft by 3ft? I liked to put those under the crib sheet to collect any messes that may happen. I actually still use them with our girls under their sheets as well in case they leak through their pull ups at night.

If you think you would rather use receiving blankets for burping and on the changing table, then go for it. They typically aren't as absorbent though as burp cloths/lap pads and you may find they are more trouble than help. I personally would return at least 1/2 those blankets and keep some of the burp cloths/lap pads.

  • I've never used these at home - I keep a couple in my diaper bag for diaper changes in random places. You never know where you'll need to change a diaper and it's nice to have something to throw down that you can just throw away (especially if you're dealing with a blow-out). I wouldn't return all of them, but you definitely don't need a zillion.

I don't think they are meant for everyday burping/changing use.

These are not the ones meant for the diaper bag, right? Because those things are awesome to keep in the car and in your bag, just in case.

These are what I have an immense amount of. I did get three quilted pads that I'm planning on keeping.

  • I'd keep some...we had two boxes and only went through one and a half. I'd keep one in the diaper bag and re-use it until it was either nasty because of one bad change or it was used a few times on a changer in a public bathroom. It's good to have so when a PP said, you have a blow out, it's easy to just toss.

  • The only time I've used those things is while traveling and dealing with sketchy public restrooms.

  • I've never heard of those.  Seems really wasteful, I'd exchange them for something that can be washed and reused.

  • You could get rid of some.  I only kept a few in the diaper bag for when we were out and changing him.  Made things easy to just be able to throw everything away.  Kind of grossed me out to think I was putting something under my babies butt to keep them away from the germs but yet would put a changing pad that I just did this with right back in the diaper bag.  Felt like I was just taking the germs to go.  Liked the idea of putting the throw away changing pad under them and then tossing it and the germs right away!

  • I never used them and had a pack (Huggies brand).  I had a travel changing pad for out in public.  And then at home I had/have 2-3 changing pad covers that I could just change if one got dirty.

DS was a wiggler in the crib so we never even used the regular lap pads in the crib either.

It doesn't hurt to keep a package, but I'd personally return most of them.

I'm confused, why wouldn't a disposable changing pad make sense if you are in a public restroom and don't want to lay your baby on the dirty changing table?

Because when you cloth diaper, you usually use cloth wipes as well, so it only makes sense to also have reusable changing pads, then you just bag up all those things together to take home and wash (at least that's what we did).
