I met my new doctor this week and he told me to go to the lab to do the glucose test sometime before 28 weeks. He told me to NOT fast and just eat as I normally would in the day before the test.
I went to the lab yesterday just to give a urine sample (he thought I had a uti). I had orders in for both the urine sample and glucose test. I told the tech I wasn't doing the glucose test that day and I would come back for it but she told me that I needed to fast for that? She was surprised that I said my doctor told me not to. I'm going to call and double check with him, but I'm just curious to see if you had to fast for yours or not.
Re: glucose test- did you fast?
My instruction sheet says, "It's okay to eat, but please avoid sodas and foods high in sugar."
My doctor told me I didn't need to fast. Eat like I normally would. She did say I shouldn't go after eating from Dunkin Donuts!
She said to eat maybe an hour before going. Then you drink that stuff an then wait an hour. So it's not like your eating right before the test anyways.
I had to take a 2 hour Glucose Test right after Thanksgiving (I wasn't pregnant then) and I was told to fast.
I'm not sure if the difference is that I wasn't pregnant at that time...sorry I'm not much help!
Chemical Pregnancy
The 1 hour is supposed to be non-fasting (though as pp said I would eat at least an hr before the test and go easy on the carbs)
The 3 hour is supposed to be fasting
I had a gluclose test at 14 weeks and it was a total surprise for me. I went for my normal appt and while there they asked if I could take the test. I said sure, not knowing anything really about it. I passed with flying colors. I took it because my family has a long history of diabetes.
I have to take it again next Wednesday and was told to do everything normal. No fasting or anything. I'll probably eat dinner a bit earlier the night before and make sure I have no snacks. That morning I'll have water and some protein like eggs with a bit of cheese!
Each doctor is different but to me if you fast your kind of tricking the test. If you eat, it'll show up or not...your being completley normal in your routine. GL!
I was told not to fast for my 1 hr glucose test, but they also gave me a little handout with instructions that included things that would be more beneficial to eat beforehand than a candy bar and some soda. Here's some of what it suggests:
Protein foods such as cottage cheese, eggs, peanut butter, or tofu with carbs such as bagels, english muffins, or cereal without sugar coating and low fat milk.
Avoid juices, fruit, pancake syrup, and other sugar coated foods on the day of the test.
I'll probably just eat some scrambled eggs and/or toast for breakfast that day instead of cereal or my probably not as healthy as it could be yogurt (yoplait whips, yum!)
