glucose test- did you fast?

I met my new doctor this week and he told me to go to the lab to do the glucose test sometime before 28 weeks. He told me to NOT fast and just eat as I normally would in the day before the test.

I went to the lab yesterday just to give a urine sample (he thought I had a uti). I had orders in for both the urine sample and glucose test. I told the tech I wasn't doing the glucose test that day and I would come back for it but she told me that I needed to fast for that? She was surprised that I said my doctor told me not to. I'm going to call and double check with him, but I'm just curious to see if you had to fast for yours or not.

My OB told me to be careful with what I ate. I scheduled mine for a morning and didn't eat after 7:00 that night before. For breakfast I had water and a few crackers.

  • I was told only to have water. I had a very high number several weeks before, and I think it was from too much gatorade on an empty stomach. (My personal theory.) The Dr will tell you what s/he wants.

  • My instruction sheet says, "It's okay to eat, but please avoid sodas and foods high in sugar."

  • The point of the test is to see how your body reacts to a diet with your normal intake of food.  You don't want to eat a ton of sugar right before because it's measuring a moment in time and anyone will have a spike with a sugar filled meal.  But you're fine eating something - higher protein, lower in carbs, avoid blatant sugar.  If you don't pass and end up taking the 3 hour they'll have you fast because they want a much more controlled account of how much glucose is in your system.

  • My doctor told me I didn't need to fast. Eat like I normally would. She did say I shouldn't go after eating from Dunkin Donuts!

She said to eat maybe an hour before going. Then you drink that stuff an then wait an hour. So it's not like your eating right before the test anyways.

  • I had to take a 2 hour Glucose Test right after Thanksgiving (I wasn't pregnant then) and I was told to fast.

I'm not sure if the difference is that I wasn't pregnant at that time...sorry I'm not much help!

  • My doctor said to watch the sugar intake the day before and not eat anything at all 3 hours before the test.  But maybe there are different rules for different glucose drinks?
  • I was told to eat a well balanced meal and to stay away from fruits/carbs.  My DH cooked me an egg and cheese omlette and some turkey bacon.....I PASSED :)
  • I was told to eat something low-carb and low-sugar for breakfast, but not to eat anything for 2 hours before the test.  I'll probably scramble an egg or something.

  • I was told nothing but water after midnight. Mine is scheduled for 8:00 am and I have to stay at the office for 2 hours. I was told to bring a snack for when it was done as I have a regular doctor appointment scheduled after the test period. No morning cup of coffee, oj or banana - these nurses are taking chances with me they might regret. :)

  • My OB told me not to eat for an hour before the test. I went this morning though, so I hadn't had any food yet for the day.

  • I just finished doing my 1 hour test.  My doctor gave me a few notes on what to and not to do.  The basics were basically to have a low carb no sugar meal this morning.  She also said to have as little grease content as possible as sometimes it can trigger the test.  I had a glass of milk with a cheese omlet.  Here is hoping everything went well.  Not sure when I find out.

  • The 1 hour is supposed to be non-fasting (though as pp said I would eat at least an hr before the test and go easy on the carbs)

The 3 hour is supposed to be fasting

  • I was told not to fast, but to make sure I don't have a carb-full breakfast. I made eggs and bacon and ate around 7:30, and had my appointment at 10:15 with blood draw at 11:15. Worked fine for me. :)

  • I was told to eat a well balances, low carb/sugar meal at my normal meal time.  I was tested at 14 weeks and passed easily after a breakfast of eggs and 1/2 cup fruit, and 1/2 cup tea.  I am being re-tested at my next appointment and have the same instructions.

  • I had a gluclose test at 14 weeks and it was a total surprise for me. I went for my normal appt and while there they asked if I could take the test. I said sure, not knowing anything really about it. I passed with flying colors. I took it because my family has a long history of diabetes.

I have to take it again next Wednesday and was told to do everything normal. No fasting or anything. I'll probably eat dinner a bit earlier the night before and make sure I have no snacks. That morning I'll have water and some protein like eggs with a bit of cheese!

Each doctor is different but to me if you fast your kind of tricking the test. If you eat, it'll show up or not...your being completley normal in your routine. GL!

  • I was told to not eat or drink anything for 2 hours before the test - I have the 1 hr tomorrow morning, as suggested by my OB.  They told me its easiest to have it done first thing in the morning, and to eat after.

  • I was told not to fast for my 1 hr glucose test, but they also gave me a little handout with instructions that included things that would be more beneficial to eat beforehand than a candy bar and some soda. Here's some of what it suggests:

Protein foods such as cottage cheese, eggs, peanut butter, or tofu with carbs such as bagels, english muffins, or cereal without sugar coating and low fat milk.

Avoid juices, fruit, pancake syrup, and other sugar coated foods on the day of the test.

I'll probably just eat some scrambled eggs and/or toast for breakfast that day instead of cereal or my probably not as healthy as it could be yogurt (yoplait whips, yum!)

  • I'm guessing that every doctor/test is different. I have mine in 2 weeks and I was told to fast...nothing after midnight the night before. I can have water and that's it! I don't remember what I did with my first one, although I'm thinking I fasted as well since it wasn't a real shock to me with this one. I do remember having to drink the nasty stuff...I had the orange and I was told it was the least nasty. Totally not looking forward to this considering I'm hungry ALL THE TIME now! Let's just hope I won't be so cranky and I won't throw the drink back up. GL to those of you who have yet to take your test as well!

  • U didn't fast with either PG, per the protocol of my doctor's lab.. Different labs and doctors look at the numbers differently based on the intstructions they've given you. A fasting test will have a different cut-off number than a non-fasting. Neither way is right or wrong, it just all depends on what your provider is looking for.

My doctor gave me instructions that said I could eat, but the list of foods to avoid on there is ridiculous. I decided just to drink water before because my appointment is first thing in the morning.
