What is your Hospital Bag 'Bag'?

So from what I've heard you don't want anything huge, makes sense, but you also don't want something too small. People keep saying 'about the size of an airline carry on' well my carry on is usually a rolling suitcase and I feel like bringing a rolling suitcase to the hospital is strange. Other than that I just have giant duffle bags... which feel equally strange.

I'm thinking a Vera Bradley Weekender bag is probably about appropriate?

For all you ladies who already have your hospital bag 'bag' please let me know what it is. I'm thinking I should start packing in the next 15-17 days (by the 1st of July) so I need a bag.

Re: What is your Hospital Bag 'Bag'?

  • I'm planning to use my Nike gym bag, but if I start packing it and see that it isn't enough space (I tend to over pack) then I have a slightly larger duffle bag from LL Bean I can use.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I don't think anyone will be judging you if you roll your carry on size suitcase into the hospital. :)

  • I plan on using the Vera Bradley weekender bag, but we shall see how that goes once I actually start packing everything in there. I also have a REALLY small roller bag and might use that instead. Seems like stuff gets wrinklier/messier in a duffle bag faster than it does in a roller.

  • i'm packing my triathlon transition bag.  i figure if it can get me through endurance sports it can get me through endurance labor.

  • Well..  :)  My first time I used a backpack I believe and ended carrying a bunch of stuff.  The backpack, the boppy, another backpack for DH, baby bag...  So I went back and asked my fellow Dec 06 moms and they all said they used a carry on suitcase.  Some even said they used a full size suit case.  So don't feel bad.  Carry-on's aren't as uncommon as you think!  So yeah that's what I'm taking!

I brought a rolling carry-on size suitcase last time, and will do the same this time.  Most people seem to do this, but even if they didn't I wouldn't feel strange. Trust me, they have seen it all and it really does not matter.

  • VB weekender. First DD I took a similar sized bag.  Good size.

  • My plan is to take a rolling carry on and baby's diaper bag. If once I start packing the rolling suitcase is too small, then I will take a little bigger soft sided bag.

  • I plan on bringing a rolling suitcase, hopefully that should be big enough for mine and DH's stuff

  • I've used that smallest size of rolling suitcase for two of my hospital stays. I think last time I used a leather "weekender bag" from Bath & Body instead.

I don't really think the style or size of the bag is something to be overly concerned about. Take something that will fit what you want and don't worry what it is. I'm sure the hospital staff sees lots of variety. :)

  • I used a rolling carry on bag when I had DS1, and I'll use the same bag this time.  IMO, It was the perfect size because it held everything we brought (even the boppy) with a little extra room to stuff in all the gifts/freebies from friends and the hospital.

I'm planning on bringing our "diaper" bag.

It may not look big, but this baby has thousands of pockets and huge space on the inside.   Realistically, even if it didn't... DF I(or someone) can be from the hospital to our house and back in under 10 minutes in case of emergency forgetfullness, so I'm not too concerned.

DF's latest anxiety is related to having the bag packed.    After our "apple juice" false alarm yesterday, he could find no humour in the situation, his response was "see! This is why you need the hospital bag packed!"

I love this bag, where did you get it? Pockets are my favorite and if this baby comes in more colors, I may have found the bag, finally. :)

  • I'm using my carry on rolling suitcase.  I'm gonna need extra room for all the hospital goodies I can steal from the baby cart!  Can never have enough receiving blankets and such!

  • I'm bringing my Vera Bradley duffel and a rolling bag to stock diapers, blankets and formula daily that my hubby will bring to the car and empty. My friends all warned me to stock up!
  • Rolly suitcase for me as well!!
