Baby Bullet?

Hey ladies,

I have one of these on my registry - when solids start getting introduced, I want to try to make my own food - I have several friends who do this and swear by it - stating it's a little more economical and LO's seem to take not be as picky of eaters later down the road.  Most use blenders, etc., one uses the baby bullet and loves it.  They will freeze food for future and feed on demand at times...

Anyone have one of these?  Do this?  Plan to do this?

Re: Baby Bullet?

  • I was just going to use my regular food processor or blender.  I have limited storage space in my kitchen and cant justify another product that does exactly what other appliances already do.

  • If you already have a food processor, I would suggest using that. I assume the baby bullet is exactly the same as the regular bullet. My bullet bit the dust the first day I tried making my own baby food. It was probably 4 years old...it didn't get A LOT of use for it to die...I guess I would suggest registering for a really great processor that gets good reviews. We used one and it worked soooooo well! I made very large batches of a few things in one day, freeze them in ice cube trays, empty them in ziplock vacuum bags, and vacuum out the air so they wouldn't freezer burn. It worked so well. If only DS hadn't been a picky eater with baby food.

  • I plan on getting a good food processor, because we need one anyway and I though it would be helpful to have something we can use for a long time. I bought some trays for the food and plan to do what pp mentioned with freezing big batches and then storing in ziploc!

  • My sister got one when she was pregnant with my niece and has never even opened the box.  She also hates to cook, so there's that.  I plan on using hers, or just blender or food processor.  I cook a lot, especially veggies, so I think (hope) it will be easier for me.

  • For months I made all of DS's first fruits and vegetables. In most cases it really did come out cheaper than buying like Gerber's brand. I didn't buy a Baby Bullet though, I just used the regular bullet I already owned. If you do already own one, I say skip buying or having someone buy the Baby Bullet from your registry... it's the same thing. I used ice cube trays to freeze the purees. Each cube is an ounce. So once they were all frozen, I'd pop the cubes out, bag them up, label them, and leave them in the freezer until I was ready for it. Usually the night before I'd take it out, put it in a container and let it defrost in the fridge, or else just pop however many cubes you need into the microwave. Once DS had tasted all of the fruits/veggies, having the cubes was nice bc I was able to give him combos... For example, a cube of pear and a cube of banana, and he ate pear/banana puree that meal. I did buy a few Gerber containers, and saved the containers and used those to freeze in as well.

I made all of ds's food and just used a normal hand blender with no issues.  It is such a brief period of time that you need to make purees (or may not choose to do them at all if you do Baby Led Weaning) that I do not think it is worth it to get a "special" baby one.

  • I had one on my registry as well and received one at my baby shower. It looks like a pretty neat/cute product. Not necessarily something I'd buy myself but gladly accepted as a gift!

I also don't currently have a Magic Bullet/food processor...so I figured I might as well get the cute one because I know I'll get a lot of use out of it. It comes with a feeding chart by age/weight and has a recipe book.

I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff though!

GENIUS! What a great idea! I'll be doing this for sure.

  • Love the feedback ladies!  I have ice trays on my registry too because all of the friends I spoke with do what you all seem to do - pour into ice trays, pop out once frozen and label them in the ziplock for future unthawing/feeding.

I think I may change to a regular food processor, since we don't have one either and think it would probably serve more purposes.  Thanks again!

Agreed!  My sister got me a few jars of baby food when a local store closed last month and it doesn't expire until April next year, so I'll use it for LO.  Now I know what to do for storage/traveling with food to save money...keep those jars!!!

  • We are also going to be making little one's food when he gets to that stage, and I have read so many mixed reviews on the Baby Bullett and other baby food makers, that I have decided to just use my food processor since I already have it. I will then just buy little 2oz/4oz containers to freeze the food in so I can make it big batches. Plus this way is a lot cheaper than buying one more kitchen appliance that takes up room!

  • I have the regular Bullet, got it as a Christmas gift just before I started DS2 on solids. Loved it for making his food, and it came in handy for me as well. In the early weeks when I didnt necessarily have two hands to eat breakfast, I could whip up a smoothie and have that while I fed baby. I still use it for smoothies in the morning. Makes getting out the door with two kids much easier.

I don't have a food processor, so it isnt duplicating a kitchen appliance for me.

  • We didn't register for one but someone got one for us. I probably wouldn't have bought it but I think we'll keep it, since we never did plan on feeding the typical jarred stuff that they refer to as baby food! I'd rather feed regular fruits and vegetables that are unprocessed and as fresh as possible (although I have to admit to really enjoying the jars of pureed fruits, myself... seriously, the bananas! The bananas!)

We sort of have a food processor but it's this very old, tiny little thing that just chops stuff up. The bullet will come in handy for sure. I'm probably going to break it out soon and test it myself.

My regular food processor worked perfectly.  If I was to get a bullet, I'd go with the regular one and not the baby one.

What did you use to "puree" the food?  Milk/Water?  I am planning on breastfeeding, so do I just add some of that in there?  Thanks!

  • We used a steamer basket ($5) and the food processor we already owned. No need for any fancy baby food making gadgets. If you don't have any type of blender already, I'd go with the regular bullet as opposed to the baby one.

I made pretty large quantities of food at once and anything smaller than my regular sized food processor would have been a pain b/c I would have had to puree in so many batches.

  • I already have a food processor, so i'm just going to use that.  I have everything i need for the steaming part as well.

i'm also buying icecube trays for easier storage.  they make specialty ones that are roughly the size of a baby food jar i think (or maybe its half).
