August 2012 Moms

Im thinking ahead here.

I had a friend ask me how far overdue would my MW allow me to go. I told her as long as I pass my NST, I can go as long as I wanted. She was absolutely floored that my MW doesnt induce, and in rare occasions has she actually had to direct someone to an OB's care for induction.

So how far overdue is your OB/MW willing to let you go? Are you comfortable with that, or will you insist on earlier/later?

Re: Im thinking ahead here.

  • I don't think my OB will allow me to get past my due date (if he lets me go that far) because of my PIH. But if all was well and my OB ok'd it, I'd allow LO to take as long as 2 weeks past my EDD. I read that it's not very safe for the baby after that because the placenta is aging and may not provide everything the baby needs.

  • I don't have a definite answer from my OB, but she has said she won't let me go past my due date and today she even talked about inducing me a week prior.  I will have a growth scan towards the end of pregnancy to see how big the baby is getting to help determine the plan, since he has been in the 97% for size when measured the last 3 times.

  • My OB will let me go until 41 weeks 5 days, then they induce. I want to hold out until then before I get induced. I really want this baby to come when she is ready!

  • I also had a horrible induction. If I wasnt high risk I would do anything I could to avoid an induction. Ask for nst's, ultrasounds to check on the placenta and babys growth. A due date can be off to 10 days. So if you induce at 38 week baby could actually be under 37 weeks and not ready to come out. Your baby will eventually come out, I promise!! If there is no medical reason why do it.

Also with induction if your body isnt ready it wont work!

  • I haven't asked my OB this yet, but depending on what is healthiest for baby and I, we will just do whatever that may be.

My OB's policy is 10 days. After that, the placenta starts to deteriorate, from what I understand. If we had to induce a week or two early, I'd be ok with that because our due date is not in question since we did IVF.

  • I haven't asked specifically but I highly doubt that they will let me go past my due date. In general I believe babies will come when they're ready, but in many cases that's just not going to be the absolute best option, and that's okay. I have GD (diet controlled so far) and I had high blood pressure before pregnancy, but so far it has been fine without medication. I will probably do my research and fight to be allowed to hit my due date if need be, but once I hit the due date I will accept anything (as I will if it's before my due date and I feel interventions are warranted; "we think the baby weighs 9 pounds" isn't one of those cases).

  • At my 39.5 week appointment with DS my OB said if I made it to my next appointment (@40w3ds) then we'd talk about inducing. Fortunately DS came on his own the day before that appt. So I'm not exactly sure how long he'll let me go, but I do know he wont induce before your dd.

42 weeks. We actually reviewed the medical literature on this in this week's Bradley class, and 42 weeks is well-supported by research (absent any other problems, of course).

  • I'll be induced or have a scheduled c-section if baby is stii breeched at 39w.

  • I'm having a c-section at 39w, she wouldn't let me wait until 40 b/c of some issues we are already having. If I was trying for a vbac, she would let me go to 41, normal pregnancy, she would let go until 41w5d before intervention.

  • My Dr. will allow me to go one week past my due date.  After that, they induce.  I really, really don't want to be induced....but I'm not going to fight my hospital's policy on it.

  • I think my OB did the safe thing and told me IF my DS hadn't come before my due date, she'd schedule on my due date for an induction. She told me, "I'm pretty sure you won't have to wait until next week, though." And I didn't. I had him like, three days later or something like that.

I don't know, since DS came at 39 weeks and I don't really expect to go over this time.  Will cross that bridge when it comes to it, but I assume he would want to induce no later than 10-14 days overdue.
