Teachers aren't the only ones who could use a summer break. I'll admit, I could NEVER be a teacher. My mom's been a teacher for 30 years, I know it's not easy whatsoever.  But... I know there are some teachers who could NEVER do what I do, either.

I hate this time of year when my fb feed (and my IRL friends and my mom) are literally COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS until summer break, I want to punch them all in their face.

I've got eight days left. Go ahead punch me.

I don't know the exact dates teachers get off during the year. I used 3 months as the typical association with teachers having summers off. But between summer, spring, and Christmas breaks, and then the random days like Columbus day, etc, there's no argument that teachers have more time off than 2-4 weeks a year (standard vacation time for other entry level year round employees).

Also, I'm not sure who said 'teachers CAN take off at whim', so not sure where that statement was coming from, but I'm not sure of any profession (besides maybe an hourly, cashier/server/bartender) that CAN take off on a whim. My vacation days need to be cleared and approved weeks in advance. The only 'whim' I can take off is if I wake up puking my brains out.

I'm pretty sure this one's been put out there before, and it's probably more of a FFFC... but here it goes.

I hate people who are dangerous or jerks around people with children in parking lots. I stopped at Verizon yesterday to deal with my phone drama, and afterwards I was putting DS in the car and some guy just sat there waiting for me to move so he could pull in to the spot next to me when there were 50 other spots. Don't sit there making me rush to get my child strapped in just because you are too effing lazy.

And today I was taking DS out of the grocery cart to put him in his seat, and some woman next to me was in a huge rush to leave, so I had to do the awkward slam-my-huge-body-against-the-car maneuver to make sure I wasn't in her way.

    WTF a**holes?!

I totally don't accommodate the assholes.  I once saw a woman putting her baby in his carseat while this jerkwad was inching forward in his car trying to rush her to move.  She proceeded to take the shopping cart and lay it on its side in the open parking space, got in her vehicle and left.

The jerk had to get out of the vehicle to correct the cart and move it.  Bravo to that woman - bravo I say!!  I will totally do the same next time.  Right now I only have the balls to take a little longer than I should to make them wait.  I need to grow a pair! Lol.

So you get no paid holidays at your job?

And actually, provided it doesn't interfere with work, you can take a week's vacation any time of year provided you have the days.  Teachers very often do not have the luxury of paid time they can use at their own discretion, which is actually incredibly inconvenient.

Also, what exactly do you want teachers to do all summer?  is this an argument for full time schooling?  because I have seen those discussions go over like a ton of bricks on these boards.

I wasn't arguing anything about what teachers 'should' be doing over the summer. My origional UO was that I found it annoying that teachers were swarming my news feed on fb and IRL counting down the days. (yes, I block them once it starts) And it just spun from that. I never said teachers don't deserve the time off. I never said anything about year round schooling. I just find the countdowns unncessary.

Kind of along the same lines, it creeps me out when people have pictures of their kids as their profile pics on facebook. Really, do you not have your own identity? I understand you love your kids and they're cute and all but when your name pops up and its a picture of a 4 year old it is disturbing.

This was pretty boring for as long as it was. Some random musings, then I'll post my own actually unpopular opinion :)

    1) I hyphenated my last name after marriage. I don't care what anyone else does but the amount of people who cared that I did it is completely insane. I assume most of these people are uneducated aszhats with too much time on their hands. (child's name will not be hyphenated)

    2) I agree on it being weird to want to have a screenname "military wife." Here's my main reason. Both my parents were in the military. I cannot fathom any man using the screenname "military husband" on a message board.

I HAVE MANY UNPOPULAR OPINIONS ABOUT THE MILITARY FOR ANOTHER TIME

    3) I like posting my baby names because I am bored and better than the "it's a xxxxx!" posts.

    4) Whenever the "teacher debate" comes up on the nest (and I guess bump now) I want to put my fingers in my ears.

Here is my truly unpopular opinion:

I think most people who choose to stay at home really don't know what they are sacrificing. Many recognize the loss of income but not the true cost of derailing their career. My mother stayed at home primarily for 7 years and was never able to recover even half the salary she left to SAH. I don't think she had any idea that would happen, and the economy was way better back when she re-entered the workforce too. (some do recognize this and choose to SAH anyway and I respect that).

Also, at least half the bumpies I have seen who SAH can't really afford it. Then again, about half the bumpies I see can't afford kids, period, so I guess I shouldn't be too harsh.

ALL OF THIS!!!  Why do teachers think they are so entitled to a break.  Everyone else's jobs could use a break too!

Teachers get summers off b/c schools can't afford air conditioning! Also, historically, that's when the planting season was going on and they needed the kids in the fields.

Oh, and GFY. It's incredibly hard to be a teacher and we get sh!t on constantly for our jobs.

    I totally agree.

Also, we're the idiots who choose jobs that require us to work all summer.  Teachers have a very heavy responsibility with relatively little pay. The least they can get is a few extra weeks off.

College Professors on the other hand...

Also, I love twizzlers. What is wrong w you people?

As to the college professors comment, we don't REALLY get the summer off, either.  I'm at work right now.  I have a more flexible schedule in the summer, sure, but I am expected to publish, present at conferences, and otherwise engage in professional development above and beyond my normal job.  I get judged on how well I do that and my contract being renewed is partially based on it.  So I wouldn't say college profs get the summer off.

My dad was a high school math teacher for 35 years.  Sure, he got to leave work at 3:30 every day, but he was up until after midnight most nights prepping lesson plans and grading (even for classes he had taught repeatedly).  I think he earned his summers off.  Most of you probably don't have to bring your work home with you at the end of your day.

Also, most teachers work all summer, either a 2nd job or summer school. Plus, many teachers are taking courses or going to conferences during the summer to continue our education. I spent most of my summers working on curriculum for the district or completing online courses all on my own dime.

Yes Which they do b/c they can't afford not to!! Let's also not forget the fact that I get 10 sick days, 3 personal days and nothing else..and in my district...you'd better not use those days or you'll get nasty comments on your review.

Most of you probably don't have to bring your work home with you at the end of your day.

I've stayed out of the teacher debate because I am totally okay with the fact that teachers get some time off during the summer that I do not get.  I have no problem with them getting a break, because they are responsible for the education of our children and I know that can be an extremely difficult and stressful job.

What I don't agree with is the above statement.  Most of the people I know have to bring their work home with them at the end of their day.  I personally have a cell phone that I am supposed to answer anytime it rings, in case something has happened that I need to call the media about, or if the media has inquiries about something they heard.  (PR for a city) And when I worked in nonprofit, I routinely worked after hours, brought work home, and attended evening meetings related to my job.  I averaged about 60 hours a week most of the time.

My husband is a computer programmer, and he often brings his laptop home when there is a deadline he needs to meet or when he is working on a big project.

And we don't make any more money than teachers do in this area.  I'm not saying that teachers don't work hard or that they don't deserve their time off, I'm just saying that using the fact that they have to bring their work home with them as a justification for that isn't really a good argument.

The best argument in my eyes is that they are shaping our future by teaching our kids, and if they had to do that nonstop, all year round, without some good vacation time, they would probably burn out really quickly, giving nobody the opportunity to gain enough experience to be a truly great teacher.  And I had some truly great teachers in my life, all of whom deserved their summer vacations - and more.

I guess my UO is that it really irks me when people constantly talk about how so many other people "can't afford" to have kids. Really? DH and I combined make around $60,000 a year. I know a lot of you probably make that or double that yourselves, but for where we are, I think we're pretty average. We're low to mid middle class. Sure, we don't shop at Pottery Barn or J Crew but our soon-to-be three kids have everything they need, most of what they want, and regular healthcare. Do we have a ton of money saved for college? No, and we probably won't. We'll save what we can, but they'll have to work hard to earn scholarships, just like I did. I see that as character-building. What really pisses me off about that comment is that we don't NEED probably 90% of the things we consider to be necessities. I hate those baby registry checklists that are 5 pages long. Do you need a boppy? A tummy time mat? A changing table? Nope. Are they nice to have? Maybe.

Yes, there are people who have way more kids than they can afford. I would suggest that if you have to go on public assistance in order to pay your bills or feed your kids, you probably fit in that category. (Don't get me wrong, I totally support those programs when they are used as intended, which is short term to get you through an unexpected difficult time.) But not making crazy money doesn't mean you can't afford kids.

I should also add that I don't know if you were referring to people who are on state assistance or if you meant people you PERCEIVE to be too poor to have children. The phrase itself just set me off. Children don't need a big expensive house full of things. They need the necessities, yes, but beyond that, they just need loving parents.
