This! My DH is a teacher and he NEEDS summers off to recover from the school year. Teachers take so much sh!t from the administration, parents and students through out the year. It is a seriously high stress job. If he didn't have summers off, I am positive he would have burned out after 1 year of teaching and left the profession entirely. Don't judge until you have been there...

Also, we're the idiots who choose jobs that require us to work all summer. Teachers have a very heavy responsibility with relatively little pay. The least they can get is a few extra weeks off.

Can I also add about the teacher thing that I never ask someone how many vacation days they earn a year. I never ask someone how much they make, if they get Christmas bonuses or if they are about to get a raise.
Why is it okay to comment in teachers' vacation and pay? I don't get that. I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of other peoples jobs so why should someone feel free to comment on mine. For example, football players make millions and get the summers off but I don't question them because I don't KNOW what it takes to be a football player and I'm sure there are shiity parts of the job that I don't know about.
Maybe I should research those on my 3 months off??

Also, most teachers work all summer, either a 2nd job or summer school. Plus, many teachers are taking courses or going to conferences during the summer to continue our education. I spent most of my summers working on curriculum for the district or completing online courses all on my own dime.

I think there are plenty of people out there that work high stress, low paying jobs that deal with equally difficult organizations and administrators. I can think of quite a few service men and women that deserve whole years of. So I can't justify that as a reason for teachers to have summers off. Obviously it is part of their job for reasons that might be fairly antiquated - i.e. the planting, harvesting season. Regardless, they get it off and good for them. But I agree with the many other posters in this thread about the countdown that happens this time of year. It's totally unnecessary and highly annoying.

The fact that I think it's annoying when every day since May 1, teachers on my fb have been counting down, doesn't mean I deserve a 'go f yourself'. I read it as "Good for you" not "Go _____ yourself." My comments, if you took them at rude, weren't meant to be and I didn't direct them at you. I directed them to just everyone in general.

It's like, I don't want to delete them permanently b/c who knows, maybe I wanna congratulate them in the future on a fantastic accomplishment. If they post more than once that they're 'cooking dinner!' or 'going to the gym!' or 'my cervix is dilated to 2! my cervix is dilated to 3!' (yes, that actually happened) I fix their profile so I can only see 'important updates'. If I want to creep on you, I'll come find you.

I do get insulted when someone says teachers feel "entitled" (your words) to a summer vacation. I spend so much time defending my profession and it's under major attack right now by politics. The whole WI recall is primarily b/c the governor is destroying our educational system. So this is a subject I get fiery passionate about very quickly.

I totally agree with this statement. My H is a teacher (he does work at a school that goes year round though with a few weeks off at the beginning and end of the summer session.) I do generally block those who do the countdowns and whine about school starting up again in September, because it's obnoxious to read.

My unpopular opinion is if you want summer break, become a freaking teacher. If not, stop complaining that they get it.
I agree. Being a teacher is a thankless job. They get put throught the ringer constantly and still return each day to teach our children. I am not a teacher, but I am married to one. It's amazing the crap they have to put up with!
