I was at a BFing store yesterday asking the LC about bottles, and she recommended the new Medela Calma nipple for when I go back to work. It is supposed to be designed for BFing babies because it makes baby actively suck for milk to come out, whereas other nipples, even slow-flow, will drip some milk out without baby sucking.
It is ridiculously expensive and it got mixed reviews on Amazon. I was wondering if anyone here has used it and what you thought. The concept sounds great but $17 for a bottle nipple is keeping me from just buying it to try it out...
Re: anyone use Medela Calma nipples?
I have them and they are the only ones I will use. We have had no problems with nipple confusion so I'm afraid to try anything else.
I think they are great. I've never had problems with leaks because they DO have to suck like breastfeeding but my only complaint is that the lids never stay on properly--this ticks me off because I don't want the nipples to get dirty in the diaper bag.
I only have 4 of them because of the huge cost so I do a lot of washing (he only has a bottle of pumped milk every few days though so its not a huge deal).
I have one of these, but not sure I would say it's worth the money. My son is still able to eat extremely fast out of it, and I have found he spits up a lot after having a bottle with this nipple. Last night I tried a Dr. Brown's bottle for the first time and found that he drank it slower and did not spit up as much afterwards. It was only the first time with Dr. Brown's, so I can't say for sure it wasn't just a fluke he had less spit up, but I will keep trying the Dr. Brown's bottle because with the Calma he does seem to have more of an upset tummy, no matter what I do to try and prevent it.
Overall I think it's a neat idea, but I don't think it's worth the cost. My son has never had any nipple confusion problems with any bottle we have given him, he still takes to the breast with no issue.
