Baby Names

WDYT of the name Kingston?

Just curious! Our son is Max (Maximus). We met in a town called Kingston, fell in love here, etc. and it keeps rolling through my mind as a possible future name for baby #2. Love it or hate it? Or somewhere in between?

Re: WDYT of the name Kingston?

  • It just sounds like it's trying too hard for me.

*Edit* and I'm not against naming a child after a place of significance (see DD's name) - but Kingston has that celeb-a-baby association.

  • I'm not a huge fan, but I like the idea of using it as a MN if it's paired with a traditional FN.

I like that it has significance to you and your DH, but I don't like that there is no good nn and I feel like Kingston is a "big" name that would need a nn.

  • I like it and think it goes well with Maximus!

  • Blech.  Fine for a middle name but don't like it for a first name.  Plus, you make it sound like you still live there?  If so, NO.  I think it's so weird when a Madison lives in Madison, Austin lives in Austin, etc.

  • I agree that it goes great w/ Maximus, but it screams Gwen Stefani to me.  Like PP said, I love it as a middle name though!!

  • Makes me think of Jamaica; is NMS but if it has so much significance to you and DH you could totally make it work as a MN

This is a guilty pleasure name for me.  I wouldn't use it, but I do like the sound of it.

This.  I agree with other PP's who suggested to use it as a MN maybe.

  • I like it. I think a sib set Maximus and Kingston is powerful. If it didn't have a meaning to you I would be a little worried because Maximus you can use the nickname Max but it would be hard to find a nickname for Kingston. But especially since it has that meaning to you I really love it.

  • I'm not a fan of Kingston. It sounds like a little too much "try" for me. Plus Kingston and Maximus are both BIG names, kwim?

TOTALLY disagree!!! Kingston is way too strong of a name to be a middle name!!!!!!!! I say name him Kingston and OWN IT!

(Kingston is 100% our boy's name!--we chose it together when we were first dating WAYYY before Gwen Stefani was even thinking of getting pregnant)

  • I love it! I think Kingston and Maximus go great together since they are both bold names.

    Congrats!

  • Eh, I think it sounds a little pretentious.

With that said, it will always make me think of Gwen Stefani.

  • Maximus and Kingston just seem a bit...too much together. Maximus on its own is fine, and Kingston on its own is okay I guess, although nms, but together it seems like the parents are trying really hard to give their boys hyper-masculine names.

  • I know a Kingston Teddy who goes by King.  So he's a toddler named King Teddy.  That's pretty bad IMO.

  • Phonetically it sounds nice, but honestly I think it sounds kind of pretentious and trying too hard.
  • I kind of like it. I could see it used as a FN or MN.

This. Can it be a middle name instead?

  • Being that I am from Jamaica, I LOVE it :) But I think it goes well with your other DS' name as well. I have known other people with it as a name that has a nn Tony.

I know someone who named their son Kingston and she calls him King, it sounds very pretentious to me! I don't like it.  It does remind me of Gwen Stefani too. I think since it has a meaning to you I would use it as a middle name.

  • I love it even without the significance, but that just makes it even better. I say, go for it!

My husband and I fell in love in Cambridge, and tossed around the idea of using it as a middle name but just couldn't make it work for us.
