confused, contractions 1.5 min apart, cervix closed

On 3rd tri too.

I'm very confused. I'm 35 weeks. I've been having minor menstrual like cramps for about a week now. Sometimes more painful than others. They haven't improved so I went into anti natal, they hooked me up to a machine and they told me I was having contractions. I was having them about a minute and a 1/2 apart for about an hour. They gave me an iv of fluids and it did nothing. They gave me a shot of turbutaline and they kept continuing. They ended up giving me 3 shots (the max amount) and they eventually slowed down. Weird thing is I had no idea I was having contractions and my cervix is completely closed. I went in to see my doctor today and, he checked my cervix and it's still closed. He told me that sometimes some women just contract a lot. He said if it were up to him he wouldn't have given me the medicine and would have let me either go into labor or that it would resolve itself. He said it's fine that they gave it to me and he understands because it's still a bit early but that her personally wouldn't have used it. Does anyone know what this is or heard of this? Also, can these constant contractions harm my baby? He says it's fine and his heart rate was perfect. He's moving around a ton but my doctor said that there is nothing wrong with lots of movement. This all just seems sort of strange to me.

Re: confused, contractions 1.5 min apart, cervix closed

  • I was hospitalized for contractions / preterm labor at 31 weeks (I'm 34 1/2 now), and was also given a shot to stop them. I'm still having them, and they are very close together and very strong, though my cervix is closed and firm. They have also been doing fetal fibernectin tests every 2 weeks which continue to come back negative.

My OB will not give me any more of the meds (due to how far along I am) to stop from contracting, because research has shown that your uterus has to contract a certain number of times to deliver a baby (I can't remember the exact number, though it's in the thousands) so no, it won't harm your LO, it's simply your body preparing itself... I am currently on bed rest and we're hoping our LO will stay in there until 37 weeks.

I was told to keep myself hydrated and my bladder empty, as dehydration and a full bladder can make contractions worse. I'm also supposed to take it very easy, and limit bending and standing, as well as car rides.

Take a deep breath! Your doctor knows what he's doing, and while it's hard not to worry, you're so close to being done! :)

Thanks so much for your advice. I wasn't told anything about the car rides which surprises me because I commute a total of almost 4 hours each day! 1.5-2 hours each way. Thanks again.

  • Check out the internet for Irritable Uterus.  That's what my midwife told me I was suffering from....basically menstraul like cramps without progress.   I find that the more I hydrate, the better I feel.

  • I was also sent to the hospital for preterm labor at 30 weeks twice and got shots of terb each time and then was put on bed rest with medications until I got to 35 weeks.  As of my 37 week check, my cervix was still closed.  Today is my 38 week check so I will find out if that has changed at all!  It is all confusing, but you just have to listen to your doctor and keeping hydrated does help a lot.
