Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep schedule for a 3 month old?

Is it even possible?  A lot of my friends said their LOs just went to their own sleep schedule by 2 months, and they could set them down drowsy and they would fall asleep on their own.

We are still struggling to get LO to sleep in our arms and set down without waking. I am desperate to get him on some sort of schedule, but I wondering if its even possible.

Re: Sleep schedule for a 3 month old?

  • It depends a lot on the baby.  Are you doing a consistant bedtime routine?  That can help you baby get into a schedule of whe they sleep and for how long.

It's not unusual for a 3 month old to not be able to put themselves to sleep.  It's probably more the norm to have to help them to sleep.  Your friends just lucked out. They don't learn how until 4 months, but they can still have sleep problems after that.

  • DD is 3 1/3 mo old. We do the same things usually before bed: massage, bath, bottle, and cuddle to sleep. Bedtime varies depending on how the Feedings went that day. There are days that she falls asleep easily in our arms after the bottle and other days she fights it. So I agree with PP and think it just depends on the baby. Good luck :)

  • Something to think about is food.  Whether you breastfeed or formula feed, babies who are having digestive issues are much harder to get to sleep.  I EBF and it wasn't until DD was 2mos old that I ditched dairy from my diet and finally got some consistency out of her.  My pedi insisted she wasn't allergic and that Ishould be able to eat whatever I wanted but my LO told me otherwise.  I was dairy-free for about a month, so nothing residual in my system, when I slipped up ordering something with cheese on it...oh boy did I regret that for the next 4 days!  With dairy, her stomache was always churning, she fussed non-stop, and she also nursed more frequently as a way to ease her aching tummy and break up the gas (which as you can imagine became a vicious cycle!).  Being dairy-free has made things MUCH better.  No longer can we hear her poop from 3 houses away (seriousy she sounded like a firing squad there was so much presssure behind her, poor thing) and no more sleepless nights.  She's 6 1/2 mos now so the only time she wakes is if her teeeth bother her and when she hits a growth spurt, she will wake 2-3x a night for a few nights until it passes and then it's back to her 11-12hr nights.
