Babies: 9 - 12 Months

are you thinking of switching to organic formula?

i never switched her diapers or bottles when they were in the news for harmful chemicals, but i can't keep ignoring everything...so i am thinking of switching to organic formula - does anyone know if they tested that too or is that a given that there would be no such chemicals in organic formula?

Re: are you thinking of switching to organic formula?

  • I'm not really up-to-date with what you are referring to, but after I weaned we went to Similac Organic.

  • I EP and supplement with Similac Organic.  I'm always so freaked out about chemicals it helps ease my mind a bit...although I haven't looked into it in regards to melanamine, but I definitely plan to.
  • Although organic could be fine, they don't know where the trace element came from, it could be the machines or the bottles it came in, so who knows?
  • The melanamine got into the formula's on accident, I dont think organic formula's are exempt to accidents, they are both made in factories.  Hopefully they fix the problem immediately and it isnt an issue soon.

  • I was under the assumption it was in formula from the manufacturing process (from machines or packaging) so it could happen to any formula.

  • From what I understood the chemicals were most likely in the packaging so I am not sure if organics are immune. Did they only test the major brands then? I ebf but have some formula just in case.

  • I was going to a mommy support class and we were talking about organic vs regular.  I don't know the whole story but the lady who ran the group said to stay away from organic formula because they have sugar in it?  I didn't look into this but I thought that was interesting.
  • Similac Organic is made with sucrose. I personally wouldn't use it. However, not all organics are made with sucrose. I've been using Private Selection Organic for a few months now and really like it, and it does not have sucrose in it.

That said, I don't think organics are exempt from this issue.

I looked into this when we had to start supplementing. ?All formulas have added sugar though the type varies. ?There was a New York Times article on how Similac Organic has more sugar added than most formulas. However, Similac uses cane sugar which is better than say corn syrup.
