Babies: 3 - 6 Months

when did/have you/plan on introducing berries?

My DD is 51/2 mo. and shes doing really good with solids. I'm a little confused on when to introduce berries. from what I've read some say wait until 6months some say wait until 9months and some even say wait until 1yr.  or older. My DD is already on stage 2 foods and if  your supposed to wait until 9-12months then why is there blends of berries in stage 2 for 6months+? when did you introduce berries or haven't you yet/when do you plan to? I understand they can have an allergic reaction but IMO you'll never know until you try and if they do then don't give it to them again for a while... Side note: I don't do everything "by the book" I go more on my intuition/instinct and baby's signs of readiness. TIA

  • Most berries they say wait a year until you introduce due to allergy risks.

We wont give berries or peas to DS until he is a year because both my side of the family as well as Hs side of the family has a lot of food allergies.

  • Peas?  Now that's an allergy you don't hear often.

I've seen not to give raw berries until a year, but nothing about cooked ones.  Not sure what makes the difference.

I'm not alot of help on this because I haven't intorduced them yet but I'm thinking after the 6mo mark. I want to wait till' I can get them from the farmers market and that will be well after her 6mo mark. I'm with you on the "not by the book" thing my DD seems to be ready to do thing about a month before you are "supposed" to. We have no food allergies on either side so I'm not to worried.
  • Peas are related to peanuts. Cranberries and blueberries aren't true berries, so we'll be introducing those right away. Strawberries can be given if pasteurized, not just cooked. I would assume the same with other berries. Apparently it kills the allergen. We'll introduce the pasteurized berries soon, but I haven't decided about raw ones. We have no history of allergies, but I'm cautious.

A lady on Nov 2011 posted that they are actually in the same family as peanuts and that she didn't find this out until after her son had a severe reaction to them. I had never heard that before.

  • For our family, once I start solids at about 6 months, everything is fair game. I don't delay any foods except for honey (for obvious reasons) and strawberries (since babies in my family have a very mild reaction to them. But I will try strawberries every couple of months until there is no reaction. We also do BLW so that also makes a difference.

Same here.  My pediatrician actually told us many more recent studies show it may increase the possibility of allergies if you wait on a lot of foods.  I don't know if I would feel the same way if our family had a lot of allergy issues, though.

This is my approach as well. I asked our doc about strawberries when my toddler was young, and he said we could give them a try at anytime because allergic reactions are usually mild (hives). I think they ended up being one of her earlier foods.

We do this as well.  We obviously haven't started solids with our 2nd yet, but once 6 months hits, anything except honey is fair game.  The health nurses actually told my sister at her daughters 6 months shots that Canada Health is taking away all food restrictions except for honey and recommending that you introduce anything as you are comfortable, so apparently Canada Health is along the same lines as me - I just got there first!

  • We aren't very by the book either. We don't have any food allergies on either side so we just intro things as we feel ready/they're available/baby shows interest.

That being said. My son actually has some mild reactions to berries. Basically, he likes them a lot and when he eats berries he ends up with messy poop and a bad diaper rash. However, he always eats a lot of berries at a time (can't resist) so that may play a role. I'll probably wait and introduce berries for my daughter once she's eating finger foods (which is earlier than most because we do a bit of BLW as well as purees). I don't like pureeing and then straining and berry seeds create an annoying texture, so I never pureed berries into any of my baby foods for my son.

  • The only berry we will be delaying is Strawberries until probably about 8 months but that just my personal preference no other reason. He's tried raspberries mixed with bananas and peaches and did just fine. (We are not by the book either.)
