What percentile is your baby growing in...

I have my initial u/s at 18 weeks 2days and was told the baby was growing fine and is actually measuring a week ahead of schedule.  My sister who is due a week after me had her u/s yesterday and was told her baby is measuring in the 33rd percentile.  My mom asked if I knew what our baby boy was measuring at and I honestly had not thought to ask just because I know babies grow at different rates in the womb, but that has got me wondering if any of you bumpies have been told or asked what percentile your baby is growing in.  I figured since he is measuring a week ahead of schedule then he is high on the percentile chart.  If you do know what percentile your baby is in did you ask or did the doctor offer you the info without you asking?

Re: What percentile is your baby growing in...

  • According to my u/s my baby is in the 51st percentile of where he should be for as far along as I am :)

  • Eh.  It's all an estimate at this point, so I don't really care, unless the baby is so small or so huge as to indicate some sort of medical problem.

  • It doesn't really matter until 3rd trimester. But to answer your question, my first 2 babies have been in the 90-100%tile from about 20 weeks until birth.

But I make monster babies, so...

  • the tech report given to my Dr said that baby weighed 2000 grams, about 4 lbs.  The Dr assumed that it was a mistake and it was supposed to be 200 grams, because that would put him at 7.5 oz, where he should have been at 17weeks 6 days.

    There are percentiles?

I just assume that there is error associated with any weight measurements taken at the a/s, and that babies go through growth spurts at different times.  So, I'm not concerned with percentiles at this point.

I knew there were percentiles once the baby is born that is how they determine how well your baby is growing.  I took a child development class in college so I knew about the percentiles but I had not heard anyone mention them in relation to an u/s because babies do grow at different rates.

  • My a/s radiology report has the age at which the baby is measuring and a percentile for a bunch of different categories (head size, abdomen size, etc). It's funny because for some, he was measuring exactly on target with my due date (19w3d) and was at a higher percentile, and for others he was measuring at 19w0d (which I'm pretty sure is accurate according to charting) and those percentiles were low (10-25%). I determined that, since he's measuring within 3 days of where he should be, we're fine... and the percentages are odd because apparently between 10 and 90% are "normal."

  • I too was told at my a/s that baby boy is measuring a week ahead.  My midwife showed me the printout they get from the u/s tech and it said the head measured in the 85th percentile, and other parts (I think legs, belly, etc.) measured around the 75th percentile.  That's about what I expected since DS #1 was about the same.  I never would have thought to ask for percentiles but it's interesting stuff to know.

  • I wasn't told a percentile with my daughter.  But this time, I was told baby is in the 93rd percentile.  I assume she told me because she mentioned she is slightly concerned with how big he is, and will possibly do a follow up ultrasound a little later on to check on his size again.  Because she did emphasize that he was big.

  • At our anatomy scan I was 18w4d and he was approximately 9 ounces. The tech said he was in the 58%. Hope this helps. LIke others have said-- if  there IS something to worry about they'll let you know.

  • I haven't asked the doctors about percentiles at all, but I do ask how far along Baby and I are measuring and they always tell me "right on time."  So who knows what that actually means.  I figure things are measuring within a week of my due date.

  • At 19wks 3days my baby girl measured an average of 19wks 2days, was 11oz, and was said to be at 50%.  I only know because my OB showed me the u/s report.  The tech said nothing other than that she looked good & was measuring on time.

Our baby boy is also measuring in the 93rd percentile. They said it is probally a growth spurt, or I am a week ahead of where they initially thought. (or he may just be a big one).

    We'll see!

  • My little guy is in the 22 percentile. Which sounds small, but babies go through growth spurts and everything so I'm honestly not worried. On top of that, DH and I are both pretty short, and my family always has small babies. I was a week late and only 5lbs 10.5oz.

  • They haven't given me percentiles, and I don't think they even gave me a weight at the a/s.  They just said everything looked good and that she was measuring ahead by a few days.  So I assume everything's pretty normal, so I won't worry too much.

  • I wasn't told anything about his size other than that he was measuring exactly on track the day of the scan--19 weeks. I didn't know people were provided weight measurements or percentiles until I saw those posts on here over the last few days.

I have never been given a % until after DS was born.

  • i was given the ultrasound report at my last doc visit and from there went online to check the percentiles. she's currently measuring a little small (25-37th percentile depending on the measurement), but that's well within normal. they say anywhere from 10%ile to 90%ile is normal because you have to consider variation in the population (e.g. standard deviation).

  • I've never been given a percentile while pregnant. I've only been given estimates on weight - which are just estimates. I've also been told whether or not the baby is measuring behind/ahead/right on track.

This baby was 8 oz at 17 weeks for my amnio. I have my regular a/s tomorrow, so we'll see how much she's grown since then.

  • Doc said my baby girl was in the 29th percentile and we will have another U/S at about 34 weeks just to check for growth.  But my other DD was small too, but perfectly healthy so I'm not worried.  BTW, DD is 3 now and growing like a weed, she wears 4T in almost everything!
