1st Trimester

2nd time moms, what chair did you preferred?

Just stater thinking about the nursery, and I was wondering what other mothers enjoyed more.  A rocking chair or a sofa chair.  I figured I would be doing a lot of breastfeeding there and I can't decide which one is better.  The rocking chair seems like it would relax the baby more but a sofa chair seems like it might be more comfy.  Any suggestions?

  • With my first I had a glider and used it every night for nursing.  With the second she had a twin bed and a glider in her room.  I ended up using the bed.  My recommendation is to be sure that you are comfortable in a nursing position and/or that a boppy (or whatever) fits in there with you.  My glider was too narrow for the boppy to fit in with me so I ended up using the arm rests as a support.  If those had been higher it wouldn't have worked.

My glider was a cheapie from Walmart.  It's held up.  Unless you have a use for it after babies think about just how long you'll be using it when you look at prices.  Once babies are done my glider is gone.

  • I have a glider but I don't like to BF in it. The cushions are not comfy and the arm rests are too high. I usually BF in bed or couch with boppy or pillow when he was younger.
  • Love my La-Z-Boy.  It's great because I slept in it many nights at the beginning and it was super comfortable.
  • I have a glider right now. MH and I talked all the time for the first few months how we will we would have gotten the big sofa chair.

ETA: And we still use the glider to this day. That's what we sit for reading books and cuddling before bed.

I honestly think this is a good splurge & I think will be upgrade for this baby.

This exactly.  Rocker/recliner.  The gliders aren't very comfortable to  nurse in, and you can sleep in the rocker/recliner on nights the baby is sick or fussy.

  • I  had a glider and an arm chair, but would end up on the couch.  My DD was 2 months old on Christmas day 2008 and I have sweet memories of sitting on the couch at 2 am nursing, when the world was still and snow was falling in nothing but the lights from our Christmas Tree.  It is a memory forever etched in my heart.  Those 2 am feedings were always my favorite.

  • I used a glider rocker.  I love it.  We still rock DS in it to read books or when he is feeling snuggly.  He even climbs up in it and looks at books by himself.  I chose it because It has a highback and I could just relax my head back on it.  I would make sure you sit in every chair and try them out.  I also especially appreciated the pockets on the sides of the chair.  We moved the glider from the living room, to our bedroom, to DS's room, and it never had a table next to it. HAving a pocket to put burp cloths in and bottles when he was finished.  Good luck deciding.

  • I love my recliner.  I was torn between a rocker/glider or the recliner, but ultimately decided on the recliner.  I chose the recliner partly because SO really wanted it, but mostly because I wanted to be able to start the tradition of LO sitting on my lap while I read to him, and the recliner was going to allow that tradition to continue for longer than a rocker/glider.
It turns out the recliner was heaven sent because I had to have a c-section and it was the only thing that I could sit in comfortably and put my feet up (I was so incredibly swollen from all the fluids they pumped into me during the surgery).  Plus even before delivery I slept in it a few nights because I couldn't get comfortable in bed.
And the added bonus SO can use it in his "man cave" once we are done with the baby thing.

  • I spent most of my time BFing in the recliner in the LR (it also rocked).  Kid ate for 40min at a time every 2-3hrs in the newborn phase.  I would have never left the nursery.  This way, I could be lazy & watch TV and have easy access to food.

Get something you're going to want to plant yourself in for a long time.  Eventually, we moved that into her room, but not until she was much older (say, 6-8mo or so?) when we really had a pretty regular bedtime routine going on.

  • Our glider didn't get that much use. I preferred to nurse on the couch propped up with pillows (it helped that B didn't care about being rocked). We'd have been better off buying a nice cushy rocker/recliner that wouldn't scream "nursery" when were were done with it. I love the one at PBK.

  • A recliner...genius!!!!  I dont know why I hadn't thought of that.  Defintiely would be a better option than the glider!

  • I have a glider only because those nights when baby is crying and not sleeping- I can rock him/her to sleep. I would be lost without it on that front. As to nursing- I nurse in bed at night and during the day I can nurse anywhere....literally. I'm not as good as say Mrs. Duggar on TLC standing up with her breast friend pillow, but good nonetheless.
