XP: Need Help. Baby screaming during feeding

My DS is five months old.  In the last few weeks he has started screaming when I give him his bottle.  Not every feeding, but usually 2 of the 5.  I am basically fighting with him to get him to eat. He gets all excited when he sees the bottle and pulls it to his mouth but then after a few sips, starts screaming.  I have tried different temperatures, nursing instead of a bottle, singing, walking... nothing seems to help.

I thought it was just a phase he is going through but it does not seem to be getting any better.  He also is not eating solids yet per the doctor's orders.  And he is taking about 5-6 ounces a feeding - less during the 2-3 feedings where he is screaming.

Anyone experience anything similar or have any insight?!  TIA.

  • Sounds like teeth to me. Has he got his yet?

  • No teeth yet.  I tried feeling around in there and could not really feel anything coming through.  But maybe it just has not pushed through the gums yet.  I would estimate this has been going on for about 3 weeks now.  I brought it up to the pediatrician and he kind of just shrugged it off.

  • Is he tired? My DD wouldn't eat when she was tired and overstimulated. I either had to feed her bouncing on an exercise ball or put her down for a least a half hour nap and then try to feed her once she woke up.

  • I was thinking it could be that he was getting too tired but he started doing it at feeding after he just woke up.  It is primarily those feedings before he goes down for his big nap or to bed at night.  However, it is not isolated to those feedings.  Sometimes he even does it during is morning feed when it has been almost 12 hours since he last ate.

I started feeding him before his bath at night because I thought the bath was wearing him out and that was the problem.  Seemed to help temporarily but 90% of the time, he screams at his night feeding.

  • Maybe reflux? Maya had bad reflux. She would cry during feeds and often would throw up.  Her ped. put her on Prevacid and we haven't really had any more issues
  • Leah did this for a few weeks (she is FF) until we switched to Gentlease. She stopped immediately and has been fine since. It could be reflux if not teeth, or a sensitivity to something being passed in your BM?

  • sounds like reflux to me dd has it and thats what she would do and arch her back it was awful shes on previcid now and is much better
  • DS did this when he was teething bad. Try giving the formula cold and also putting the nipple in the freezer. Once I did that DS was able to take the bottle. He did the same thing, really excited to see the bottle, take it very eagerly, but then as soon as it got in his mouth he would push it away and scream and cry. Sad But the cold formula and nipple worked.
  • DD is doing the same thing! She will eat a little and then go crazy and the waterworks kick in. It is really only the last bottle of the day so not sure if she is cutting back her ozs, overly tired...she smiles and pulls the bottle to her but then after a few tugs starts to scream and then will try and eat again and then screams again. It has been going on for about a week

  • does DC have diarrhea or vomiting or gas after eating?  DS developed lactose intolerance and now we use generic Similac Sensitivity.  It's soy and for fussiness and gas.
