So I may be opening a huge can of worms with this topic, but I wanted
to hear different opinions on this Arizona issue that has made its way
to the Supreme Court. As a native Arizonan, I feel that our state needed
to do something. This state was being overrun with illegal immigrants. I
say that with caution. I don't have an issue with immigration, but I
feel everyone should come to the US legally. Illegal immigrants use our
hospitals, schools, and government facilities and most do not contribute
to the maintenance of these places, meaning they don't pay taxes. We
need the tax money for the benefit of public programs. Another reason
why our school system is in shambles. These illegal immigrants also
bring violence and drugs to our neighborhoods.
The fact that the Federal government was not fulfilling the request of more support out here to enforce immigration left Arizona with little options. I guess I support the bill to an extent.
What is your opinion on this heated issue?

Re: I think I'm opening a can of worms. SB1070...
I know this is definitely a can of worms that most are not willing to speak about and that's one reason why elected officials really don't do anything about it. Like you, I am all for legal immigration. However, I am tired of having my tax rates go so high because people (whether illegal or not) are abusing the system and getting "freebies". When I walk into the ER, it's $600 right off the bat. But they get to pay nothing. I live in Montgomery County, MD, one of the most diverse communities in the US, with an increasingly large population of illegal immigrants. They want to spend money on English as a second language classes here when other classes are getting cut due to funding issues, when those children's parents don't pay any taxes for them to go to school. I think people should have a FAIR chance... as in the same chance I do. I don't get free healthcare, my paycheck for my crappy job is 1/3 less than what it should be after taxes, and I pay ridiculous amounts of money for insurance in CASE something happens to me.
Oh and yeah... I'll say it. You're in America. You can speak whatever language you want at home... but speak English. I shouldn't have to learn Spanish to walk around in the country I was born and raised in. If I moved elsewhere, I would expect to have to learn the language. I don't get where this attitude of entitlement comes from.
Yeah this came off as alot worse than I intended.. but I've had a bad day. I'm too lazy to edit... so take it as you will
Agree 100%!
All of this. Except I'm in NC. Strikes a nerve. If people just come over legally & do things legit & its no big deal to me. If I moved to another country, I'd do it legally..it is just how things should be done.
Baby Boy #2 is on the way!
I agree with you. Maybe the bill was written over the top because law makers wanted to get the attention of the Fed so they can get the help they need out there. I live quite a ways away from there and I'm down right scared about some of the stuff I hear that goes on out there in society.
I believe it is a states rights issue and it's completely messed up that the federal government is getting involved. Unfortunately, that seems to be the way every issue is going these days.
Yup. The Fed is getting to big for it's breeches. I'm all for downsizing the government at the Fed level and returning a more individualized government back to the states.
Completely agree.
Agree 100%.
I can't say that I have a fully formed opinion on illegal immigration at this point, but here are a few of my thoughts. I'll just admit now that I'm liberal on almost every issue.
The part of the bill about the police following up with anyone who they have a reasonable suspicion that could be an illegal immigrant sounds a whole lot like racial profiling. This is never productive.
When you say that the illegal immigrants bring violence and drugs, you don't think that would exist if they weren't here? That's a pretty sweeping statement.
I think the provisions in the bill absolutely over-step states' rights. It makes total sense that the federal government should be in charge of immigration laws.
All that being said, the federal government needs to step up and make some changes. The process for immigration needs to be streamlined and made into a viable option for people. They need to figure out a way to naturalize those illegal immigrants who are already here unless they're up to shenanigans--deport those who are.
They do pay taxes and do not qualify for the same federal tax refunds as Citizens and resident aliens. Some states, MO for example do not accept the ITN so will not issue a refund at all but will definitely charge if not enough taxes were withheld through the year.
They pay sales taxes just like everyone else as well.

I live in Southern California so illegal immigration is a HUGE issue here as well and I am so sick of it and so sick of hearing people defend it. If I hear one more thing about "their rights" THEY DON'T HAVE RIGHTS they are not citizens! They are BREAKING THE LAW!
Anyway I agree with the bill. I wish California would have one as well maybe if enough States did the Federal government would actually do something about it.
FYI Just a fun fact but the US does not "officially" have a national language. Weird I know.
Abso-freaking-lutely!
First of all, wow...just wow to some of the statements on this board. Secondly, I agree with you 100% on all bolded. Thank you for being the voice of reason.
Except that every illegal ailen I ever did hiring paperwork for claimed an outrageous number of dependants so they didn't have anything taken out of their checks. And don't ask why I was doing hiring paperwork for illegal aliens....
With all due respect, basic human rights apply no matter who you are. We could hardly call America a civilized country if we threw people out of hospitals or let them and their children starve simply because they didn't happen to be born here. That's just cruel. And letting the children grow up uneducated, even if they aren't citizens, only perpetuates the problems with drugs and crime that you are so concerned about.
I'm all for supporting reform of the immigration system and saying yes, if you didn't follow the law there should be consequences, namely you run the risk of being deported. While my area definitely has its share of illegals, I think it is probably difficult for those of us not in the border states to be able to form a good opinion on what the people are experiencing there. But I will say that historically, exclusion never works in the long run. So I think in that respect Arizona would be better off trying to track and aide these immigrants in becoming citizens than trying to terrorize them into leaving.
I totally agree that legal immigration is fine, jump through the hoops and do what's needed to become a legal citizen. If you can't do that, then go home back to the country you came from.
I 100% agree with the bolded statement. The problem is that we, as a Nation, do not have a National language. There is nothing that legally says that English is the language that is to be spoken in all facets of the nation. That's why there are so many issues when it comes to language, no one can legally say, "no, you have to learn english to be here."
I think the Federal government should be involved in the immigration issue, as well as the individual states. If they aren't, what's to stop illegal immigrants from jumping from state to state as the States laws change. I think the entire immigrant process it flawed to begin with. I have a friend from college who came to WI from Brazil to go to school. He had a students Visa and did everything legally. He is extremely intelligent, and personable, and was offered a corporate job with a big company before he even graduated. Well as his Visa was winding down he was getting hasseled about the date that he would be heading back to Brazil. He already had the job lined up and they were working on getting him a work Visa until he could become a citizen. The governement tried to deport him!!!!! He actually had to voluntarily go back to Brazil for a few weeks to not tarnish his record for trying to become a citizen of the US! So he did all the right things and was legally here, contributing to our community, and moving onto a job where he would be contributing taxes and working to become a citizen, but because the government KNEW he was here, they were trying to kick him out as soon as his papers were up. Yet, the illegal immigrants the governement doesn't know about go on living their entire lives here, not contributing yet using everything as if they were. Something isn't right....

So do you think it's ok for someone to be living in this country illegally and only pay sales taxes?
Wow, I guess it's too easy to forget that our ancestors were all immigrants, too. And lots of them never learned english!
Have a heart. Yes, it's a problem and it needs to be addressed somehow. Yes, there are some illegal immigrants who bring drugs and violence to the US. However, there are MANY more who are just geniunely looking to make a better life and a better future for themselves and their children.
Yup, I remember where and how my ancestors came to this country. And the ones that were already here and got the short end of the stick. It is hard to focus good thoughts on the illegal immigrants who are here just to make/take money from our economy to send back to their family in another country. I liked our illegal neighbors from Mexico until a US Marshall came knocking on our door looking for information on a man that used to live there. He was wanted in Mexico for multiple rapes and murders, and he came to this country to escape "justice" in his country. I stopped attempting to talk to them.
ITA. This whole thread is making me cringe.
OP I could like this to your post on P&CE, what do you think the concensus would be?
(1)Good point. But I think the underlying problem is that those illegals who contribute to the violence and drugs have less reguard for getting caught. In places like Mexico and Columbia, drugs and violence run the country. So of course they think they can get away with it here, too.
(2) I would be ok with making illegals legal, but not naturalized. I don't want someone sneaking in the back door to a political office. The government needs to make some big changes. I think we should close all the boarders until we can get a handle on this situation. Make the process streamlined, as you say, then open the boarders back up. You can't fix a leaking pipe until you turn off the water.
Ahhh, I see. If one is a criminal, they ALL must be criminals! They do all look alike, after all.
Yup. EVERYONE knows white (let's face it, the immigrants discussed here are not generally caucasian) people don't do crime
i guess you missed the firs part about getting taxes taken out and not qualifying for a refund. while a previous poster mentioned that everyone she hired claimed an outrageous number of dependents. I personally know of many undocumented workers that claim only the dependants they truly have. So to answer you directly No that can't only pay sales taxes and they don't just pay those.

You make it sound like we are taking about ALL immigrants when that is not the case we are ONLY talking about ILLEGAL immigrants. MY ancestors immigrated here LEGALLY.
Than they can do it LEGALLY.
And lots of people who come here illegally just want to make money here and send it back to their family in Mexico which really screws with our economy.
And it's really stupid that the US doesn't have a national language. They need to make it English and then require that everyone learns it.
Sure, some may pay taxes but lots of them don't and are paid under the table.
Technically speaking they are all criminals being here illegally is a crime afterall not that its really treated as such.
Maybe if we can get all the druggie american citizens off of drugs, the cartels with their drug and violence wouldn't have a need to come into the U.s.
Most mexican families that come here illegally are looking for work and the "American Dream." Unfortunately, the violence that the cartels bring overshadows that. Also, all these "illegals" are doing the b.s. jobs thats nobody wants to do,
Would you want to go pick fruit for 12 hours a day and get paid a few bucks an hour to do so?
Something needs to be done about the issue, that's obvious. I also do believe they should learn English.
My mother and her family came to the U.S. to work in the fields and became citizens. My dad is a border hopper and married my mother. They've both been working since the age of 12. Not all immigrants are the devil.
Lol that everyone wants a national language but thinks the federal government is overstepping by having authority over immigration. Because enforcing what language people use on the street and that private companies use to communicate with their customers isn't government overreach AT ALL. The bump is a special place.
A special PS to the woman that is offended by the very sound of foreign languages in the great outdoors. My husband's Spanish speaking family has lived in what eventually became the US since the 1500s. Yes, that's before the Mayflower. So kindly STFU. And what do you propose we do about all of those wealthy foreign tourists spending gobs of money on our sh*t economy? Well I suppose since the federal government should get out of the business of immigration none of them will manage to travel here anyway so we won't have to worry about scary Spanish millionaires overrunning our luxury shops.
I get so tired of hearing this.. In this economy, there is no such thing as a "job no wants to do". Of course no one WANTS to pick fruit for 12 hours a day but no one WANTS to watch their family starve to death either.
Oh and plenty of illegal immigrants work in fast food restaurants as well they don't all pick fruit.
There is such a thing as a job nobody wants to do. Maybe you should start picking fruit, and wiping sh!t off of floors so these illegals can go home.
I'd like you to find me 5 people who would scrape sh!t off of floors for $20 a day.
And these studies were conducted when? Because if they weren't conducted in the last couple of years than it is irrelevant to what I was saying that in our CURRENT economy, you know the one with an 11% unemployment rate, people would do those jobs. And many Americans do manual labor (Contractors, electricians, etc that is all manual labor.) not every American works off their ass from an office while making all the illegal immigrants do all the manual labor
Oh and how about my other point that NOT every illegal immigrant works in a field? What about the hundreds of them that work in fast food resturants, a job that many many Americans would LOVE to have? I guess they don't matter right as long as some illegal immigrants are picking fruit.
Mkay I'll go ask all the homeless American citizens I'm sure they'd love to. Hell I would $20 a day is better than $0.
I live in California and I know most homeless would rather pan handle than get a job. There are plenty of jobs here and they're panhandling instead.
Seriously? What planet do you live on? Wait until a new fast food place opens near you and go apply and see who you see there..50 year old men in business suits with master degrees that want to work at McDonalds because they can't find work anywhere else and need to support their families. Everyone I know has applied to at least one fast food restaurant. I apply to one almost daily but can't get hired because there are too many illegals working there.
