S/O Milk

I talked to my pedi a little about the whole milk transition at the 9mo appt. She wasnt that helpful. Our pedi is very, do whatever you want to do, there is no wrong.

I'm lactose intolerant and so is Emery. She is currently on soy.

For those of you who are struggling with MSPI, and who are on soy, what do you plan on doing?

Silk? Almond Milk? Lactaid? We drink lactaid in this house. But I really never use it. I'm not a big milk drinker because 1) it grosses me out, 2) It has too much sugar for my diet.

Also, how important are the calories they get from milk. I noticed some unsweetened almond milk is 30 calories and regular milk is like 130. That is a big difference. What should we be looking for as far as nutrition from milk??

My friend's daughter is MSPI and when she transitioned to milk she went to goat's milk. She couldn't use soy and her mom didn't think that almond milk had enough calories for her daughter.

I have been hearing a lot about goat's milk. I dont even know where to find it! But I have heard its a great alternative. Maybe I can hit up Whole Foods or something.

  • I think different peds have different viewpoints on milk.  Our first one said that because my husband is lactose intolerant, he wanted B to start on small quantities of milk around 10 months to A) get him used to milk and B) possibly prevent lactation intolerance.  All the research I've done supported that.  I think when I asked our current ped, she got confused because she didn't let me finish the question before answering it.  She said no until he's one, but I think she thought I was asking about replacing all formula with milk.

I actually asked about unsweetened almond milk because that's what we buy if we ever need milk.  Both peds said whole milk only for awhile for the calories. I don't know what their exact caloric needs are (of course, since all babies are different), but since everything I've seen says full fat yogurt and cheeses for awhile, I guess we'll stick to whole milk for a bit too. Gag.

We are doing 2-3 ounces a day of whole milk right now so we don't go from formula to bam! milk on June 28.  I don't want to run the risk that he hates it and we have to start weaning him off formula at 1 year.

  • I've been dairy free since November when mira started showing an intolerance and my DH tends to eat a vegan diet so we are not planning on giving Mira cows milk or dairy products. However my pedi did say we could start offering her foods with dairy baked in if we wanted.

Many grocery stores carry it in the same section as the sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk. I've seen it near the tea and coffee at my current grocer.

My brother's children all used goat's milk.  Most health food stores carry it and he said some wal-marts even carry it.

Wow who knew! Its funny because my dad and my H's grandmother kept talking about how back in the day if you couldnt breast feed they would give goat milk. I thought 1) gross, 2) they are old. But alas here we are. Its still a go to.
