Baby Names

just can't decide on a name... I don't like anything enough to say it is it

I am having a girl this time and DH and I just can't find a name we both like enough to select it.

I certainly know what I hate... LOL... and I really don't like a lot of girl names.  There are some that I think are ok, or that I might like (but not with our last name).

It is so frustrating and makes me kind of feel sad.

We had no problems selecting our son's name and again this time, had 3 or 4 boy names we loved.

Have you ever felt this way and if so... what did you do?   We have bought 3 name books and been going through websites and nothing has jumped out yet.

Best we have so far are:

Katherine

Claire

Emma

Alexandra

but none of those are really right.   They all have some reason why we don't really want that name, yet nothing that we like better has come along.

We don't like super unique names.  We want common enough that anyone knows how to pronouce it.  We don't like trendy.   We also however don't really want Emma as it is in the top 5.  Above 5 is ok for us, but I am just leary of a top 5 name.

What else would you guys suggest?   Taking a 2 week time out, just waiting until at hospital where we will be forced to just decide, etc?

  • I have always liked going into hospital with a couple names  but def. have a few that you really like.  There is so much emotion and exhaustion I think it would be easy if you went in with nothing you love to pick something you'd regret.

I like all your classic girl names altho they are a little too common for me - here are some others I think are classic but not overused these days..

Brdget, Lydia, Maren, Maeve, Helena, Mallory, Emmeline, Bronwen, Scarlet

    Caroline, Tara, Quinlan,Sadie

  • I love Claire, all are nice names though.  Good luck, a break might be what you need.  We just started our search and have lots of time, but it is hard to agree and love names.
  • I love Claire and Alexandra. Both are just gorgeous, and they're classic names that will age well with your daughter as she grows.

  • I feel ya on the last name thing. I like quite a few names, but not with our 3 letter, one syllable last name :)

I also feel the same way about Emma - like it, but staying away since it's super duper popular.

Claire is one I like a lot too but I have a cousin named Clara whom we're all close too so it would be akward.

I suggest continuing to look, there's GOT to be a name out there that works!

I'm expecting twins and we're probably going with Olivia Kate and Brenna Marie.

I know Olivia is popular, but in the end, I love it too much to pass it up.

  • For DD, I read through the Social Security top 1000 name list: https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/

The rankings made it easy to cross out any names that were too popular, and I figured anything ranked too low was too offbeat, so that left the ones in the middle to choose from!

  • Clara is a name I love, but can't make DH get on board...Just thought I'd throw it out there since you like Claire!
