Pls Rec your shoes for really F-A-T feet ?

DS2 is a big guy - really sweet, chubby, and fat, especially his feet   ; )   The regular size 3 shoes are too thin for his big feet and 4's are ok but  really too long. I tried Target and some of the shoe stores around here, but no luck. Anyone have a brand or maker that works for their LO's chubby  feet? We live in a really urban area and I would love to be able to call about a specific brand before I drive 45 minutes out to the mall or some specialty children's shoe store.

Also, since I am already asking... anyone have any experience with a softer shoe for beginner walkers? He is transitioning from those Robees (sp?) with no firm sole and so far he is really resisting a firmer shoe.

I would really appreciate any help! TIA

  • Stride Rite sells wide sizes.  DD is a 4W.

  • Stride Rite. They have wide and extra wide shoes even in the smaller sizes. They also have shoes with an intermediate firmness in the soles. They're great for the transition between Robeez and traditional hard soles.
  • Agree with the PP's, DS is a 7.5XW lol and they have great shoes! A bit pricey, but he has been walking since 10 months so it's worth it! Also, Zappos (online shoes) come in W and XW and you can order them online so no trips to the store. I have ordered from them before and been really happy.

  • J wears an XW in Stride Rite.  We love that brand and it is the only one where we can find shoes that fit him.

Another vote for Stride Rite, we have to buy Izzy a 7 in other brands to accommodate her wide feet.

  • If you want actual shoes, stride rite. They will measure his foot and tell you what size he needs. LO was a double wide for a while.

If your LO is resisting shoes, you can always go with soft soled or a moccasin. We have LO in moccasins for most of her walking time. (we buy footskins brand because they don't cost a fortune and are made in the USA).  It's actually way better for their developing feet to be in soft soled shoes. We plan to do moccasins at least part time for a long time.

  • Agree with the pp's...stride rite is the way to go.  DS wears a 6.5 extra wide in their shoes.  I also love how they have the different stages of shoes, from pre-walker all the way up.

  • Ditto on having a kid with XW feet.

check out zappos.com. They have styles in xw and with free shipping both ways, you can try them out and just send them back if they don't work out

  • Another vote for StrideRite. My LO had some super fat feet when he was younger and their wide shoes fit him great.

  • My little man has HUGE fat feet, wide and thick, out pedi calls them "pillowy" feet! I absolutely LOVE a saucony sneaker for him, stride rite has them, zappos and amazon all sell in Wide or Im not sure if you have an Olly shoes near by but we love it there...much more variety than stride rite!

  • My son has huge feet! He is already a size 8W and he isn't even 2 yet!!! So I feel your pain! Unfortunatly we have always had to buy at Stride Rite. I say unfortunatly because they are pricey but they come in wide and double wide so that really helps. They are great with measuring and are knowledgable too. They have always told me which brands are best within their store for his big feet. He also has a high instep which I learned from them. I would definitely go there for a proper measurement and to take a look around. You can sign up for coupons on their site too. Once you know his size you can even shop around a bit online for good deals.

As far as I can be helpful sort of, is within their store they have told me that the Stride Rite brand and New Balance are great for bigger and wider feet.

Payless also sells wide, I find it is hit or miss though.

  • We had good luck with the Target version of Pedipeds (soft-soled) first, and now he's mostly either in size 3 sandals or size 4 New Balances.
