Next month we'll be going on a trip that is 9 hours each way. I am really dreading this! We bought a portable dvd player and 4 new movies for him but what else should I bring to keep him entertained? I really don't want anything messy or little pieces.
Any ideas? books? How about those color wonder markers that only write on the special paper?
Re: What toys/activities to bring on a 9 hr car trip?
We definitely like the color wonder stuff. We had some fairy sparkle ones that were a little messy but the traditional ones are great. Other things I like
Books (never seen before)
Travel Aquadoodle
Magent boards like this https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Dolls-Dress-Fashion-Show/dp/B002ZB1L8C/ref=pd_sim_sbs_t_16
Viewmaster stuff like this https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-View-Master-Disney-Pixar-Story/dp/B003B1ZHY4/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1334580295&sr=1-2
Good luck!
It won't be as bad as you think! Mine have gone on 10-12 hr roadtrips twice a year since they were 5 months old and it was way worse when they were babies, the DVD player is awesome, snacks and some of the small toys/books.
I actually am not a fan of color wonder & we own a ton of them- the delay in the color showing up is a little annoying to my kids so they lose interest quickly plus in the car, the caps & markers get dropped so you need to watch out for that since they'll dry out (I always hold the caps up in the front seat to put back on when they're done). There are 2 things we like better with little mess- the Color Blast books which have a single marker that they use on a page but the page is pre-colored so they only need one marker & colors itself in as they draw w/ the marker. The other thing is the Water Wow doodle book which you fill a little 'paintbrush' with water & they color in the pages in the book with the water. cool thing about those is they dry & the water fades so they can reuse them and they also have little interactive questions iwth each picture (how many flowers are there, what's on the tree, what color is the bird etc).
Stickers go a long way w/ us too, they stick them on paper, in sticker books, on themselves, on the carseats, etc. Just make sure they are stickers s/he can peel off him/herself b/c otherwise you're stuck peeling them & handing them back.
Both those 'drawing' things are always in the most random places- Old Navy, airport gift shop, etc. I looked on amazon & the prices are totally ridiculous (I wouldn't pay more than $5 for the water one and maybe like $7 for the color blast?) but keep an eye out for them. (on quick search some site called gohastings.com seems to have them for around $5 so they're out there. I don't know how amazon could possibly have them listed for $18.99.)
