1st Trimester

12 weeks and still haven't heard a heartbeat via doppler

I just had my 2nd midwife appointment, and still didn't hear the heartbeat.  My midwife only uses a fetal doppler, so I'm not sure if that's the reason? I've started to worry and so she told me I could schedule an ultrasound. Am I being too sensitive? Anyone else had a similar experience?

  • We've only seen ours and haven't heard it yet.

  • With DD we could hear it on our Doppler until like 16 weeks. If you are only 12w then baby hasn't moved out of your pelvis area therefore limiting the chances of finding the hb with the Doppler.

  • Can you see the image on the u/s and is the baby moving around?  If so, then I'm sure you are fine.  LO should be moving like crazy in there at this point?

  • I haven't had an ultrasound or anything else, which is why I'm leaning toward getting an ultrasound--- so I'll have some solid evidence other than a slightly expanded waistline! :)
  • I would ask for an ultrasound.  (I'm sure everything is fine because I think this is fairly common, but I had that experience with my first pregnancy and I ended up having a missed miscarriage.)  It's always nice to have an excuse for an ultrasound and see your little one's heartbeat!
  • My NP had trouble finding the heartbeat via doppler today and I'm 15 weeks... I wouldn't worry! And many don't have ultrasounds until 20 weeks so really, this is not unusual, try to not worry!

  • I went to my midwife today and couldnt hear the heartbeat but when she did the ultrasound the baby looked perfect and we could see it! I am sure everything is fine, I would just ask for the ultrasound to make you feel better!

  • I wouldn't worry..12 weeks is still pretty early. I had zero issues with finding the heartbeat around 12 weeks with my first two kids. But this time is very different..the Dr had to search for over 5 minutes to find it and even then we only heard it for a little bit. This baby is just hiding I think! Even at my 16wk appt today it was very hard to find the heartbeat. It could be the baby is very low, or the position of the placenta. Plus at 12 weeks the baby is still really tiny [around 2 inches]. I wouldn't worry!

  • I say that if you want an ultrasound, they should let you have one if you ask for it. It will help you put your mind at ease. There is probably nothing wrong. Sometimes the baby doesn't want to cooperate for a doppler reading. Mine didn't. I went to the doctor at 9 weeks, and they tried to get a doppler reading for the heart rate, but Baby just didn't want to cooperate. Every time they almost had it, Baby moved out of the way and they lost it. But, it you see the little heart flickering away on the ultrasound, you know everything is just fine!
