Pregnant after IF

Please come in PCOS ladies

Hi-

I am not Insulin Resistant so I stopped my Met last week at 12 weeks. I truly feel that I conceived due to that and a low carb diet.

My question is...did you continue or introduce a low carb diet after stopping the Metformin? My dr says its not necessary, but I do read a lot about PCOS women who m/c in 2nd tri and of course I am being very paranoid.

What have you done while pregnant to ensure PCOS is kept in check and baby is healthy? TIA!

  • I am nervous about this as well because I think the low-carb, low-processed sugar diet helped us to conceive while on Met. I think when they stop me at 12 weeks, I'll just continue because it's a healthier diet for the baby and I anyway. I actually hope to continue it permanently since it's what my body seems to need to function better.

  • I haven't continued my "on Metformin" diet since stopping the Met.  I did ask my OB if I'll be higher risk for GD because of the PCOS and the fact that I was on Met for a while -- she said there shouldn't be a significant risk (I'm not IR, either).  I'm just trying to eat as healthy as possible, and resist sugar cravings as often as possible.

FWIW, I, too, believe Metformin is a big part of the reason I'm currently pregnant, but I do NOT believe staying on it, or a low carb diet, will prevent miscarriage in the second trimester.

This!!!!  I'm not continuing on the metformin diet, and my RE agreed - mostly  because in my first trimester carbs was really all I could eat.  everything else came right back up! I try and eat healthy balanced meals, but I"m not as obsesses as I was when I was trying.

Ditto pp.  When I was on Metformin, the DR didn't have me on a special diet of any kind (I was on extended release, so it wasn't as hard on my stomach).

I don't find that I've changed my eating habits that much since I've been pregnant.  I do try to squeeze in more vegetables where I can.

  • While I was pregnant with my DD I stayed on the Metformin til 36 weeks, never really followed a specific PCOS/low carb diet, but did watch carb intake and tried to refrain from high intake of carbs.  I am currently on 750mg/BID of Met and plan on continuing on it my entire pregnancy as well, it worked the first time!

  • The MFM took me off Met at 13 weeks. I asked about staying on the whole time since I developed GD with my last pregnancy, but he said no, the met is twice as concentrated in the baby as it is in mom.

I follow the GD diet, which is eating every 2 hours and watching carbs. 30 carb breakfast, 15 carb snack, 45 carb lunch, 15 carb snack, 45 carb dinner, 15 carb snack. When I first started it I wasn't eating all the carbs, I thought that was too many, but the nutritionist stressed that it's necessary to eat those amounts because it's needed for fuel. I don't know if that really answers your question or not, but eating too few carbs can also be unhealthy. You can check to see if your OB has a nutritionist you can speak with, most do.

  • I'm still on Metformin and will continue to do so through my pregnancy. I tried to go off of it around 12-13 weeks and was testing my blood sugar and I kept having weird spikes and was just not willing to risk waiting to see if it leveled off. I was never diabetic or insulin resistant prior to taking it but I think my body just got used to it. My doctor said that there is nothing wrong with continuing it and if it's keep my blood sugars in check then I could continue. If for some reason I do develop GD they will take me off and put me on insulin.
