Breastfeeding

DD is eating 15oz while I'm at work!!

I am wondering if this could be normal but my DD who is 5 months old is eating about 13-15oz of pumped milk during the day while I am at work.  Usually this is broken up over 3 bottles.

My son usually only ate about 10-12 at the same age so I am not sure if my dear daughter is being over fed or if she is just a little piggy chowing down on the bottle.  I know my DS drank from the First Year Breast Flow bottles which I know made him worker harder.  My dear daughter refused to eat from that bottle and is eating out of a nuk nipple slow flow level 0.

My only real concern is that I am only pumping about 12-13 oz while at work so what I am producing isn't necessarly keeping up with her eating demands.  I fortunatly have about a 3 day buffer built up but I am just wondering what other mommies are seeing as typical consumption during at 9 hour day for their 5-6 month olds.

  • That's 3 4-5 oz bottles, right? That sounds pretty normal, to be honest.

Have you tried looking at the kellymom calculator: https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/milkcalc/

  • My DD (just over 9lbs, 11 weeks old) has 3 4oz bottles while at daycare (7-3)... So your DD sounds right in line.

  • My DS takes 16oz when I am at work. Occasionally he will take another 4oz.
  • I hope my LO is going though a growth spurt right now b/c in 7 hours at daycare yesterday, she ate five 4oz bottles - that is 20oz.  That is how much she should be eating the entire day!  Hold me..........

20 oz in 7 hours sounds like they didn't know what else to do but feed baby, so they overfed.  thats a heck of a lot of milk in 7 hours.  I don't think it's a growth spurt.  fussy could be a lot of other things besides just hungry you know?

Once again you are correct.....her ONE nap was 1:00-1:25 so I'm sure she was tired and fussy.  They feed her when she fusses.

  • My son has taken 3 - 5 oz bottles of breastmilk a day at daycare since I started back to work when he was 5 months old.  For awhile actually, he was taking 1 - 6 oz and 2 - 5 oz, but I recently dropped that first one to a 5 and he didn't seem to notice.

  • DD has 3 4-5 oz bottles while I'm at work, so up to 15 ozs.  I don't pump enough while I'm at work, but I do pump every morning at home, including weekends, and that bridges the gap.

  • I send whatever I pump the day before, which is anything from 15 - 19 oz.  DS usually eats all of it... once in awhile he will leave 1 oz.  He is down to 1 night feeding though, so it seems reasonable to me.

  • DS eats about 12-16 oz between 7-5 pm at daycare. He is almost 6 months.

DS did this during a growth spurt for a couple days and then went back to normal. I knew it was a growth spurt because he was eating like crazy at home too.

  • My DD eats between 12-15 (that is up from 9-12 at about 5 months).  She has (3) 4oz bottles and a 4th 3.5oz -- sometimes if she takes a long afternoon nap she doesn't eat the 4th bottle.

I pump 3 times at work and get 11-12 oz.  I pump every am after first feed (around 6:30) and get an extra ounce or two and that is how I break even for the week -- prior to adding the am pump sessions I was REALLY stressed about not keeping up and she had just upped from 3.5-4oz bottles so I was afraid I couldn't do it but knock wood it seems to be OK.  I eat a ton of oats which I swear also helps.

  • My daughter is younger then yours but she takes 15 ozs while I am at work. I am keeping up with her so far.

  • DS eats a four ounce bottle and 2 five ounce bottles while I am at work from 7am to 4pm.  Sounds pretty normal to me!
  • DD takes 15 oz/day at daycare ( 3 5oz bottles).  She wakes up once a night (if that) so the 1 oz/hr doesn't apply so much since she has started to sleep for a 10hr stretch.  DS eventually got up to 18oz/day at daycare around 8mos or so.
