Baby Names

Do you ever get called a different name?

The previous Maria post got me thinking, is there a name that someone (or several people) have mixed up your name with?

My name is Lisa, but for some reason people like to call me Sarah.  Not even close, I know.  I've gotten this at summer camp and at a few jobs when there aren't any Sarah's around.  Anyone else ever had this?

  • Not really a different name but I'm a Kathleen and people automatically shorten my name to Kathy

  • Yes. My name is Rebecca, but I get called Rachel all the time for some reason.

The worst thing is the when someone decides to call me Becky after I clearly introduced myself as Rebecca. I do. Not. Go by. Becky. I am pretty unforgiving about correcting people who do that...I absolutely hate being called Becky!

  • My name is Jennifer, but I had two different college professors call me Rebecca.

  • I get Elizabeth sometimes. I think it has to do with it being biblical like Hannah, and my being a conservative Christian.
  • I'm Marisa.  I get Margaret, and Melissa and a lot and at my old job somehow I got Stacey for awhile.  No idea where it came from.  I guess I think that Marisa isn't a weird or unusual name and I've had it for 29 years so clearly it's not something new and edgy...

    Nancy James 9.1.12

    Calvin Donald 8.27.14

  • My name is Dawn and I ALWAYS get called Donna.  For some reason people want to add an extra syllable.

I do have a lot of people tell me I remind them of/look like someone else they know, so I've also been called Beth (several times), Kathy, and Sarah.

I'm Rebecca too, but I do go by Becky (I go by both, depending on the context). If I introduce myself as Becky, people often hear 'Betty', but it's easily corrected.

  • As the youngest of six siblings that went thru the same school district, I was always called by my older sisters' names. Melissa, Christine or Heather. But mostly, it is my own mother that will call us by each other's name. It doesn't help that all four us girls have similar voices when on the phone.

And a professor in college would call me Ah-may, the french pronunciation of my name.

  • My name is Kristen so I get every variation imaginable, Kirstin, Kierstin, Christian, Christina, Christine, Kirsty, Kristy, ect. I pretty much answer to anything to strangers I don't bother correcting anymore.

  • My name is Kristine, but for some reason I get called Katherine.  I guess starting with a K, having a T kind of in the middle and ending with 'ine' throws some people off.

I also get Kris, Krisy, Kristin, Kristy, Kristina.

The 'Kris' names seem to really hard for people to keep straight.

  • For an entire semester a teacher once called my Stacy (instead of Stephanie) despite numerous corrections.  I finally gave up.

Whenever I call for appointments people always get me confused for Bethany.  Once though I went in to a hair appt and said my name and it took them forever to figure out they had made an appt for Destiny!  Seriously?

  • Yep. My name is Stacey.

I'm called Stephanie or Tracey all.the.time.

Once in awhile someone will call me Daisy. Yeah, I'm not a duck, a flower child or a BB gun. Try again.

  • I'm Elizabeth and it gets auto shortened to Liz and Beth.

My husband Jarrett gets all sorts of crazy: Jared mostly... but I've heard just about everything with a J

  • My name is Jessica, and I was born in the mid 70s when Jennifer was the most popular name.  As a child, I got called Jennifer all the time.  It still happens every few months.  Sometimes I correct the person, sometimes I don't.  Someone I work with started calling me Rebecca recently.  I don't really understand that one, so I continue to correct him.  Jessica/Jennifer I can kind of deal with.  Jessica/Rebecca just doesn't make sense to me.

  • People never quite pronounce mine right. My name is Laura. I pronounce it so it rhymes with Star-uh.

I get Lora a lot. Some people have told me that getting rid of the U would give me the pronounciation I want, but a lot of people rhyme Lara with Tara or Sarah.

  • No, actually... I'm a Michelle.

I remember being a little disappointed as a child because I never had a nickname.

  • My name is Sheana (Shee-na, thanks for the spelling mom!) and I get Shawna and Shee-ana.

This is why I hate it when people spell names weird :) I correct people every single day!

I'm also Laura pronounced Lor-uh. When I lived in CA, it was always pronounced correctly. Now that I live in the South people sometimes pronounce it like Star-uh. I never, ever had that happen when I was growing up in CA. I didn't even know there was more than one way to pronounce Laura!

OMG! This happens to me ALL the time! The funny thing is I have a sister named Rachel too!

I went by Becky when I was a kid but have been Rebecca longer than I was Becky. But people that I just meet insist on calling me Becky! Um yeah that's not how I introduced myself to you!

Okay, this is getting weird.  See my post below - and I ALSO have a sister named Rebecca!!  (but the name confusion occurs even when the person knows only me, so it's not like they're confusing me for her)  *twilight zone music*

  • My name is Juliet, I make sure to make a point and pronounce the T, but still when I get my starbucks cup handed back to me it almost always says "Julia"

I also got called Julie from coworkers and when in school too. I don't even clarify anymore haha.

  • No one ever messed up my name until I got married. My married name is Marcy Tra______ and now people who don't know me and just say my name after seeing it in writing call me Tracy. Obviously, they switched the letters around in their heads, but I still think it's weird.

I am a Stefanie too, and for a year when my (now) hubby started dating, my (now) MIL, called me Stacy almost all of the time...

And- I get the whole Bethany thing all the time too when I clearly say SSSStefanie. When I go into the place I order food from, and they cant find Stefanie, I have them look for Bethany.

Maybe all Stef(ph)s have this problem!

  • I posted in the other thread, but my name is Sarah, and I've been called Jennifer, Jenny, and Amanda. The "Jenny" kind of makes sense because it sounds like my maiden name, but still. The best is when people go, "I don't know WHY I keep calling you Jenny!" (thus showing that not only do they not know my first name, they also have forgotten my last name).

I reply, "Well, that's because it's pretty much my last name."

I also got called Katherine all the time at my last job because another young woman who sorta, kinda looked like me (sooorta) worked there. Granted I worked there for 5 years before she appeared, but once she arrived, we both became "Katherine." Sigh. :)

ETA: I am usually good with people's names, but to be honest, there was this one guy I worked with named David who, for some reason, I kept calling Michael. Doh!

  • imagedbliesmer:

My example is just people saying it wrong, but ALL the time.  My name is Dara, pronounced just like Sara but with a D.  All my life I have had very few people pronounce it right the first time.  I get Dana, Dora, or they prounounce Dar and then add the a.  (not sure how else to explain the wrong pronunciation.

I correct most people that are in my life, but if it's just a random person I'm not so concerned with it.  It is frustrating.  Sometimes when I put my name down for reservations, I'll just use Sara to make it less complicated.  Needless to say I'm going to be a bit picky on my LO name.

My SIL's name is Dara and she get's the D-are-uh pronunciation a lot.

My name is Hannah, but I get Anna, Anne, and Heather all the time. I understand the Anna. Heather? No idea where that comes from.
