Having a hard time dropping the bedtime bottle . . .

Ry drinks from a sippy cup all day but he still really loves that bottle at bedtime. What did you do to drop that final bottle at night?

  • We switched to a sippy cup at bedtime at about 12 months but we still let him have the bedtime sippy.  We finally stopped offering him milk at bedtime 1 month ago (2y9m).  Don't push it, eventually they'll just stop wanting it.

  • Jack was about 18 months old (sssshhhh, dont' tell his pedi) when we dropped the bedtime bottle.  He really wanted it up until that point.  After that we gave him a sippy of milk before bed.  He would take a couple of drinks and be done.  That took about three weeks and then he didn't have anything right before bed.

  • We still give DS a bed time sippy cup of milk.  He'd go to sleep without it but we are trying to get him to gain weight and any extra calories we can sneak into him help.

  • I'm still doing 2 naps and bedtime bottles!  Embarrassed  I really need to stop.

  • In all honesty, we went cold turkey with bottles. We offer the sippy just after he eats his dinner and let him work on that for however long he needs, then once he is done (whether he finishes or not), we don't offer any more. I don't recall him having a problem with that...he definitely had a 2-3 day period of not drinking as much as usual, b/c it was a change, but then he really got it and hasn't had problems since. We dropped bottles the day of his 1 yr appt.

  • I don't plan to push it until closer to 18 months. DS is down to just his morning bottle (which I think he'll be dropping soon) and his bedtime bottle. I love the extra cuddles at night and have no plans to give it up any sooner than I need to.

I say give him time to drop it on his own, and if you need to you can be more aggressive. Offer him a sippy before bed, then change the bottle of milk to a bottle fo water. Eventually he'll learn only water comes in the bottle and (hopefully) he won't be interested anymore.

  • We had to go cold turkey.  She didn't care if the bottle had milk or water in it she just wanted the bottle.  She was not giving up that bottle for anything.

I like this plan.  Smile  He lays his head down on me and reaches for his bottle when I rock him before naps.  I don't want to give it up anytime soon!
