Pregnant after IF

Intro & SCH question

Hi everyone!

I  wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. First, congratulations to all of you ladies! My name is Danielle and today I am 9 weeks. DH and I were successful with our first IVF.  The pregnancy was progressing perfectly until Wednesday.  I had my ultrasound in the morning, baby looked great, heart rate was strong. We even graduated from the RE that morning. No more than 2 hours later, I began gushing bright red blood and passing huge clots. I really thought it was over. Went to the ER, where I waited 7 hours, all along hysterical believing I was miscarrying. I was finally taken back to the u/s, which was an ancient machine but they saw the heart beating away. Luckily, the bleeding stopped and my cervix was closed. I was released with a diagnosis of threatened miscarriage.

The next day, I returned to the RE and they found a subchorionic hemorrhage, but baby was still looking good. The RE said the SCH was in a "good" spot & should not affect the baby. I was advised to stay on modified bed rest, which I did. I had no bleeding at all until Sunday morning when the red bleeding started again accompanied with severe cramping. I went to the RE and again u/s showed a healthy baby but the SCH had gotten larger. Thankfully, my cervix was still closed and the bleeding tapered off by 7pm. I returned to the RE yesterday for another u/s, where everything was right on track but the SCH had grown overnight. The RE I had today had a different opinion than the RE Id been seeing. I asked her if it's still in a "good" spot and she said "well, no it's surrounding the baby." She basically told me we just have to wait and see, continue bed rest & stay hydrated. Oh, and to most likely expect to bleed again.

So, I guess my questions are: has anyone else had a large SCH? How has it affected your pregnancy? What did your Dr. suggest?  I am so freaked out by this whole thing.  I am constantly checking to see if the bleed has started again, and obsessively searching the Internet for information. I have my first appt with my OB Wednesday, where I hope to get more answers.

Im sorry this is SO long and thank you all so much for reading! I wish you all happy & healthy pregnancies and look forward to getting to "know" everyone!

Re: Intro & SCH question

  • I had a large SCH (5 cm x 2 cm) at 6w3d, just days after I first saw the baby's hb for the first time. I was given the same instructions as you, told that it was large, and to keep taking my baby aspirin, and to go on modified bedrest. I went in a week later to check on it (no subsequent bleeding), and it hadn't gotten smaller, though it has at later u/s, and is now almost completely gone. From what I know, some women reabsorb it without bleeding, and some women bleed it out. I know there's also an increased risk of miscarriage, but it's still pretty low, especially early in the first trimester. SCH is the most common form of first tri bleeding, other than m/c, happening in 3% of pregnancies. I don't have any help with it getting larger, but you might want to ask if you should be on a blood thinner (like baby aspirin, if you're not already) to help it resorb. Good luck!

  • I got a call from the nurse after my last u/s telling me they saw a SCH, but she gave no instructions on what to do about it. I was caught off guard when she called and had no questions to ask her, but I plan to follow up at my u/s tomorrow. From all the googling I've done, it looks like most of them resolve by 20 weeks and don't cause any major problems. I hope that is the case for you. Good luck!

  • I had a small one at 4 weeks, but they said it wouldn't be a problem. Fast forward to 13 weeks when I wake up in a puddle of blood. The SCH was about 4cm, and I was told to take it easy, and put on pelvic rest until I hadnt seen any blood for 2 straight weeks (I spotted for 3 weeks, so 5 weeks pelvic rest). My SCZh was behind baby A's placenta, but gradually shrunk and went away. Sorry you're dealing with thus!! Step away from Dr Google, drink plenty of fluids, and REST!! Take it easy....let other people take care of you.

  • I started to bleed from my SCH at 9 weeks I am 11 Weeks and 5 days today and still have brown discharge from it. My SCH is pretty small 2 cm but I have bleeding it out for 2 weeks now. At my OB appt at 10 weeks it was still present and has not shrunk. My OB said there is always a threat of m/c with a SCH but most of the time it resolves it's self. I have just been told no exercise or intercourse until the bleed stops. I am sorry you are dealing with this. I know how stressful it is. ((HUGS))

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome and kind words. Also, thanks for the information, I will definitely be asking my OB a lot of questions tomorrow.

I am so sorry for those of you that also have SCH's - after what we have all been though with IF, it would be nice if we could just have an smooth, uneventful pregnancy!! Congrats to all and I hope everyone has a H & H 9 months!! :)

  • I had a small one too, located away from the baby on the side closest to my cervix (i.e. a good spot). It bled out on me big time twice between weeks 6 and 8, but other than some random spotting, it resolved itself before I was out of the 1st tri. I wish I had advice for you on why it's getting bigger, but hopefully it starts to resolve soon and stop tormenting you!  ((hugs))

  • I had a giant SCH - about twice the size of the baby at 10.5 weeks.  I had several large bleeds, a few ER trips, and modified bed rest up until 20 weeks.  At my 20 week a/s there was no sign of the SCH.

I know how scary it is, but mine was all of the worst case scenarios (larger than the baby, located in a not so good spot) and it was fine. Take it easy and you should be fine.  Lots of us on this board have had them - so if you have more questions or need support this is a great place to come.
