Eatting habits? Answers please :)

So first off let me say i can't STOP EATING! I'm so unbelievably hungry! I even wake up in the middle of the night and my stomach is grumbling because of how hungry i am! Crazy!

So my question is, how careful do i have to be about what i eat? I've read all sorts of things and there is so much that is restricted! It's unreal! I'm almost getting to the point where i'm SCARED to eat! What is good? What isn't?

I have a few friends that are/were recently pregnant and they said they ate whatever! I'm confused on what to do! I just want it to all be safe for the baby!

Thanks guys :)

Absolutely eat whatever you want! Just try to stop and remind yourself of the important things to eat. Check out this website. I found it to be pretty helpful with my first and I plan on using with this pregnancy, too!

  • I don't have an answer but I feel the same way.  I've also read tons that have scared me into thinking the slightest "bad" thing is going to do irreparable harm to this little baby and he/she will be sitting in therapy 30 years from now saying "The doctors say it can all be traced back to that piece of cheese my mom ate while pregnant not knowing it was unpasteurized."

For me, I'm staying away from the obvious boycotts...alcohol, raw food including raw fish, soft cheeses, and deli meats.  I also try and focus on eating things I know are good for the baby...fruits, vegetables, grilled meat, water. I've switched my Orange Juice to the kind that contains calcium and I'm trying to eat more yogurt.

    Good luck!

  • Awhh! Yeah i understand that! I think it's more about the intakes of "bad food"!

How do you stay away from deli meats? That's one of my problems! I normally make sandwhiches for lunch everyday so thats one thing that worries me!

  • The deli meat thing has been hard.  So far I've replaced my usual cold cut lunch sandwich with things like salad w/grilled chicken, a garden burger from the work cafeteria grill, and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.  I'm still figuring it out too so any substitution ideas would be helpful!

  • Deli meats are a HUGE problem for me. And of course, all I want to eat right now is Subway. I do have deli meats occasionally. I was told it's OK, as long as you heat it up until it's steaming. For me, that takes about thirty seconds in our microwave. I fix the bread portion of the sandwich and put the deli meat in a ziploc bag by itself. I heat it up at work, then add it to the bread. I can't stand warm or toasted bread, so that's the only way I can eat it. Good luck! :)

  • So basically as long as it's not old and it's fresh and you warm it up it's pretty safe? Because i've had turkey numerous times (fresh) and even salami! and i wasn't heating it up but then again i didn't know i was pregnant at the time!

  • Id say you're over thinking it....which I know is exactly what every mommy to be, including me, does! Im like pp--I stay away from the obvious no nos like alcohol and raw things, I heat up lunch meat whenever I eat it and keep my caffeine and fish to a minimum. Otherwise, try to eat healthy foods and give in to your junk food cravings only once in a while---easier said than done right.

  • With DS #1, I ate whatever I wanted, when I wanted.  I craved Mexican food, pancakes and also ICEES. I gained 50 lbs.  However, up until about 31-32 weeks, I had only gained 28 lbs.  The last 22 lbs were due to pre-eclampsia.

This time around, I am trying to be more mindful of what I eat.  I am craving healthier things so far - caesar salad, raw baby carrots and cottage cheese.  The two unhealthy things - chocolate milk and corn dogs... LOL

The only things my doctor was pretty adamant about me not eating were things like sushi and certain kinds of fish (don't really remember them, because I am not a big seafood eater) and he said to be careful of like the junk hot dogs.  He was fine with all beef. I know they say to be careful with lunch meat, but he didn't seem concerned.  I ate a lot of turkey sandwiches with DS.  My sister also did with their kid and everything was fine!

Everyone tells you this is the one time in your life where you have an excuse to gain weight and eat what you want.  I agree, but you also want to try and stay healthy for you and for your baby.  :)

  • First off, the deli meat thing is a load of crap. Eat it! It doesn't have to be warm. I would be shocked if your doctor tells you not to.

Second, since you're so hungry, I would just say try to find healthy snacks like fruits and veggies to fill you up. Or maybe things that are filling like milk, etc. I would have times like this in my last pregnancy when I was just so, so hungry. It's normal. You will probably have periods when you don't want to eat at all too.

There are certain things to stay away from, like fish that are high in mercury and unpasteurized milk/cheese but other than that you're pretty okay. Don't go too extreme about it. Enjoy your pregnancy.

  • I know what you're saying about lunch. I eat sometimes the school lunch depending on what they are serving. I will also pack peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or egg salad sandwiches and whatever I cook on the weekend like spaghetti or casseroles I try to cook a bunch so I can take leftovers to work for lunch which for the most part has worked out well.
