3rd Trimester

32 weeks - baby is breech

Anybody else?  I'm super bummed.  My dr. said we'd schedule a c-section for 39 weeks in case he/she doesn't turn before then.  I'll get a scan at 36, 38 and 39 weeks to see if the baby turns before the date they sent.  I am realllly hoping that the baby turns bc all along I've been hoping to avoid a C.

Re: 32 weeks - baby is breech

  • You still have plenty of time for your baby to turn! I was in this same situation at 36 weeks, baby was breech and I got sad... And now I am 37 weeks and baby is no longer breech!! YAY! :) So..try not to stress it yet. GOOD LUCK!

  • You're DR should be shot for telling you that! You have plenty of time- that baby could move 10x between now and then! Why scare you unnecessarily? And why do you need ultra sounds to tell? My DR can feel with his hands on the outside of my belly where Los head is and which way he's facing. Relax. Have faith...baby knows where he/she needs to be...and also not all breech babies need to be c section either...throw that curveball at your DR next visit. SO, don't be stressed- it's very early on at 32 weeks to determine those things.

Don't worry about it yet! DD was breech/ transverse my entire pregnancy until she finally turned at 36 weeks.

Agreed. There's really no reason to alarm you at this point! But if you really want to try some things to turn baby,  I've heard good things about the website Spinning Babies, and there's also chiro and accupuncture techniques that may help. Also, a c-section should be the LAST resort for your Dr (not the first option he provides). If baby doesn't turn, then there ARE other options, including what I listed above and an external version. Also, why would you need to have a section at 39 weeks instead of waiting until at least 40?! A breech baby isn't ready to come any earlier than a head-down one.

  • My Ob won't even check until 36 weeks. The baby can move a lot between now and then.
  • Good grief...you doctor is a yahoo for making you stress like that. You have plenty of time.

  • My doctor doesn't even check until 36 weeks, they can even change positions after that.  32 weeks is way too early to schedule a c-section off of.

  • Don't worry! I have epilepsy and am on meds so I'm "high risk" the Perinatologist did a us at 30 weeks and I was vertex, at 32 weeks I had a 3d us and was breech, today at 34 and 5 I'm vertex again. At 32 weeks there is a ton of fluid space so they flip flop a bunch. Don't let your dr scare you. I work in maternity and occasionally we have c/s scheduled for breech babies, scan them beforehand and no c/s is needed bc they have turned since their visit. :)
  • I'm in your shoes exactly... LO has always been breech and with her size (she's a big girl per ultrasounds), my doctor feels like she may not flip. And I trust my doctor. So what we are doing is scheduling the c-section for anytime after 39 weeks (she won't do it any sooner and I am okay with that) and if she does flip, we cancel the c-section.

As far as the external versions, not everyone is a candidate for them from what I've read. Because I am overweight, my doctor advises against it because she can't get a good feel for the baby to turn her.

My birth plan from day 1 has been to deliver a healthy baby in whatever was necessary. If its a c-section, so be it. So I'm not super hung up on having to have a c-section (personally).

    Good luck :)

  • I definitely understand your concern, but try not to worry yet. You still have plenty of time! Check out spinningbabies.com and try their ideas. My daughter was transverse at that point as well and I tried some at-home ways to get her head down. I went to the indoor pool and did handstands, tried the yoga poses, flashlight trick, you name it. By my 37 week appointment, she was head down and good to go! It might be good to mentally prepare for the possibility of a c-section just in case, but I really think there is a good chance it will all work out. Good luck!
  • P.S. I just read the other responses, and I agree that your doctor is totally jumping the gun here. A) It's too early to worry about it, and B) it's odd that he would schedule to have it done before 40 weeks. If you do end up needing a c-section, I would talk to him about pushing it back to a later date. Sending you good vibes that LO turns and you don't need the c-section at all.
  • I'm confused. How do you know the baby is breech already? I thought most women don't get an ultrasound to check until after 35 weeks, if ever? Could totally be my dumb question for the day. :)

Agree with the other ladies, you've got plenty of time for that little baby to turn, you'll be fine.

  • My baby was breech until the day I got my 36 week ultrasound to check. She was stubborn enough to wait until the day we officially checked. I got worried about it about 34 weeks and so I started laying on an ironing board propped up on the couch with my head on the ground, and put a bag of frozen veggies on the top of my stomach. (They will try and get away from the cold) I didn't do this as much as I was supposed to, but I think it still got her to turn. You can even put heat at the bottom of your belly, and also play soothing music down there, too.  You have until 39 weeks for her to turn, but it will probably happen much sooner!

By the way, I'm sorry your dr is scaring you like this! There's no reason to be alarmed yet! (Although I was really worried, too, so I need to not say anything like that! LOL)

This.  Statistically, it's safer to deliver a breech baby vaginally than by c-section. There is only one type of breech that is trully complicated (the legs in the 'splits' position, not both together).

In any case, check out spinningbabies.com they have lots of tips on how to turn a baby.  And you have other options! A version, accupuncture etc.

  • This LO was breech until 34 Weeks. She turned just a couple of days after I scheduled the c section. Hope you get to cancel yours too.

This.  OB said not to worry about it until at least 36-37 weeks.

  • Dont' know what to say. Our baby was breech at 32 weeks and still is 5 weeks later. My scheduled c-section is 4/4. I was quite bummed, but a scheduled c-section is better than one after several hours of labor IMO.  At least I have had time to make peace with it.

Good luck! There's still time for baby to turn so don't panic, or cry...yet...I was in tears last week, but now I'm all good. ;)
