1st Trimester

Hair Coloring

So I have been SO sick and finally this week I felt good- keeping food down, even blowdrying and putting on makeup- go me! So I wanted to do something nice for myself and made an appt with the hairdresser.  I got a cut and color- talked to her about being pregnant she talked about no amonia and it not soaking into scalp blah blah.  I felt good about it and went ahead.  Now I am thinking WTF is wrong with me- should I have talked to my OB first- probably.  I am doing the worst thing ever and googling all the risks...any of you ladies color in the 1st tri?

Re: Hair Coloring

  • I'm getting mine dyed back to my natural color this weekend in an effort to save money & also protect baby from fumes.  I'm going to tell my stylist that I'm pregnant and see what she recommends.

  • I asked about this and they said the hair coloring thing is just a myth, and you have nothing to worry about as long as you aren't in a small tight space with the fumes. I just color at home so I'd open windows and stuff.

  • Im getting mine done Tuesday.  Colored and Bleached.  Its more about having adequate ventalation when your having it done vs absorbing in the skin.

  • I bleached my hair and dyed it a few weeks later and my baby is fine! My doctor told me that as long as you are in a well ventilated area, you should be fine! Don't worry about any of that crap that you hear about it going into your blood and what not. BUT beware; I was told that because of the hormones sometimes your hair can turn out a totally different or weird color than what you were expecting! So always have a back up plan just in case (:

  • i am a hairstylist and work with color all the time i just make sure to always have my gloves on when I am pregnant.. most professional color lines out now are safe to use because they do not make them with the harmful chemicals they used to. hope this helps..

  • I'm so glad someone posted this :) I want to dye and redo my highlights and I've been skeptical about it...you get information overload everytime you google something lol but then again when you think of how many years women have dyed and bleached and got their nails done and the babies were fine, I think it boils down to society and our need or want to 'fit in' with the 'clan' of pregnancy. Hope everyone has a happy healthy pregnancy!!

  • My doctor just told me that she'd prefer that I wait until my third month of pregnancy before getting my hair done just in case because that's her preference but that a lot of women do it throughout their pregnancy and they are fine!
