I haven't read everyone's answers b/c there are a lot. BUT, check your contract. It does not seem right. If you are using FMLA (which doesn't count over the summer b/c it's already time off) then I don't see how your principal has a right to replace you. I'm a teacher too. This just isn't right.
You should read everyone's responses. Also, in some districts FMLA counts during the summer. Teacher contracts vary wildly. Just because something is true for you doesn't mean it is true for everyone.

When I had DS2 (July baby) I took all of Sept. out and had the retired teacher who I replaced as my sub. Everything worked out well and I was glad to be home for a few extra weeks. I still had to stay late when I returned to finish a month's worth of grading projects but was caught up within a week or two. Check with your union rep before you decide to make sure your position is safe.
