Shopping cart cover, yay or nay?

I saw at least five moms with shopping cart covers at Super Target today so decided I should take a look-see on Amazon and I found this Leacho one. It looks really comfy. My question is this: Do you think it is heavy and is it a huge pain to use one? I think it would be useful just for a more comfortable shopping experience, lol, but also the whole germ thing. But then I'd have to wash it every time? What do you say third tri...thanks!

Re: Shopping cart cover, yay or nay?

  • We had a cover... didn't wash it every time .. I left it in my truck and used it during outings.

  • I have never once used one.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Nay - Our son is daycare and prob has more germs then the cart :)
  • I bought one at a yard sale for dd and never used it once. I'm not the type to be particularly concerned about germs though!  And she didn't really start sitting up in the cart until she was a year or so old. Until then we just carried in her infant seat.

  • I used it more as a toy catcher than a germ protector.  We don't use it much anymore though because I don't really give him toys during our trips anymore.

Same. Someone bought us one and we tried it once....I think it's buried in the trunk of DH's car somewhere.

  • I have 2 LOs and have never used one. I've never even had the urge. Shopping carts might be gross but the germs on the grocery cart are not gonna kill my LOs, and it's good to build up immunities. Plus, they look like a huge pain in the butt. Why would I want another thing to haul around, on top of my 2 (soon to be 3) LOs, and all the groceries.

  • I'm surprised there aren't more responses promoting these!  I'm not super worried about germs but I have used mine almost every time I grocery shop for a year and a half.  I love that my daughter's comfortable and it holds her sippy cup and whatever else she has.  I wash it maybe once a month and just keep it in my trunk.  I definitely recommend it!

  • Yay. We have two and have almost worn them out. We used ours all the time for shopping carts and high chairs in restaurants. The shopping cart is so disgusting. With the raw meat and potential for leaky bottoms, I'd rather be hassled with the cover. We have the Floppy Seats that fold into themselves like a little bag. I want to cry a little when I see a baby eating the handle of a shopping cart.

  • DS is over 2 and a half and we still use it everytune we shop, he often naps in the cart (laying sideways like a bassinet LOL) and as 2 nurses we are Kind of germ a phobes lol!

  • This is my first child, so I havnt personally used one. Yet.   But my sister has 3 children, all of whom she has used a cart cover with. She Loves them.  It helps keep the littlest ones from chewing on a yucky handle and the older ones are strapped in alot better.  You dont have to wash it all the time.. theres the side that touches the cart.. and the side that touches the child. So unless it gets dirty(spilt drinks, ext) then you only need to wash it every so often. Kind of like we dont wash our jackets constantly like we would our shirts.

  • Never used one.  We wipe the cart off quick if provided by the store.  Kids need to get a little germy.
  • We use one.  I'm from the north east and besides the germ protection, I find it comes in handy in inclement weather.  The stores don't wipe the shopping cart down from a drizzle or a little snow, and who wants to sit on a cold wet seat?
  • I used a cover for a long time.  Didn't wash it each time though.
  • HUGE YAY! I use one EVERY time I shop. I am a germaphobe:), but I like it for the comfort it provides DS too. I can give him his snacks, drinks, etc. without them falling through the cracks too. I keep it in my trunk and wash it when it gets icky from snacks...

  • total waste of money. to me, they look silly and overcautious.

  • She was in her infant carseat for when I was still really concerned about germs and then by the time she could sit up on her own in the cart I think the germ exposure is good. If there is a wipe thing handy I'll wipe it down and I don't let her eat the handle.

  • We used one for quite awhile with DS but not because of germs.  DS just had a hard time sitting back in carts and would always end up tipping forward.  The cart cover we have has shoulder straps so it just helped him to stay a little bit more secure in the cart.  And it's nice with the toy loops so I could attach a toy and keep him a little occupied.  And I could put puffs on the fabric between the handle and the edge of the cart and it made a nice little tray for him.  We also didn't wash it every time - only when it got grungy.

This is the same brand that we have - just a different design: https://www.amazon.com/Jeep-Shopping-Cart-Chair-Cover/dp/B0033UWSYK/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1331902652&sr=1-1-catcorr

  • I think they are great to have.  My son still thinks it's funny to try to lick the cart if I forgot to use it, so I definitely use it when we go shopping.  I have only actually washed it a couple times.  I just leave in in the car so it's always there.

    I agree...we used it for 2 1/2 years.

  • I have one that I plan to use- my new mommy friends say they are great to use in restaurants as well- they make the hard wooden seats more comfy for your LOs butt too! I always disinfect the germs on the shopping carts (grocery stores in my neighborhood provide sanitizing wipes next to carts)- I'm not a crazy germ lady but I got a REALLY bad virus that had me hospitalized while pregnant at 33 weeks and think that taking the extra step to protect baby from bugs like that (especially during flu season) is great!

  • We used it all the time.  We used more as a high chair cover though... DD was so small she would slide through almost!

  • I definatly plan on using one
  • We still use ours fro DS. As a PP mentioned, it's great to hold DS's cup and snacks. It's also padded on the bottom for a more comfy seat. Now granted, at DS's age, he isn't always in the seat. Sometimes he pushes the cart, but we like having it for when he's in the "off and running" stage again. it helps keep him out of trouble....well ok, the cover doesn't but having him in his seat does. When he was younger we could attached various toys to his cover as well to keep him busy. We don't wash it all the time but don't really see the need. There is a top and a bottom, so if you always put the bottom on the bottom(seat), where's the problem?

As for being heavy and a pain, it's fabric and slips right on the seat area, no fuss.

This is the one we have for DS

We don't use it for high chairs because it doesn't fit them right. We did have our own booster seat for going out. for one thing, DS would get out of the ones provided and the booster keeps him strapped down when needed and has a tray which works well for snacks or when, height wise, he doesn't reach the table properly. Plus it's much more stable than the restaurant ones. DS has just about fallen out of theirs a number of times before we got the booster.

I know some people with toddlers DS's age just let them kneel on their seat, but that doesn't work for us, for one thing, we don't let him just get up and run around when he feels like it, which is what he's do most of the time. Plus he's nosy and won't sit and eat and has a tendency of turning around and hanging over seats of other people, etc.
