Baby Showers

can anyone tell me what they think is used with this cake?!

I absolutely LOVE the cake, but I can't find instructions on how to make it anywhere :( Any idea ladies?

  • Well where did you find the picture?  If its from a blog or something you could just email the author.  I don't know if each piece is separate layers or the baker has special pans (but I imagine you can still make it by using many layers) and the icing is fondant which you can buy at grocery stores and craft stores like Michaels.  Fondant is kind of rubbery and you can play around with it and create all kinds of fun shapes.  The shoes look like are fondant also, or maybe not I don't know.  You could get wooden letters and paint/glitter them and hot glue a piece of strong wire onto the back or bottom.

Fondant, florist wire, silver dragees, edible silver powder, probably some gum paste and quite a bit of talent / know how.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say if you can figure out what it's made of, you're probably no experienced enough to pull it off.. Not to mention the cost of supplies will be pricey (silicon rolling pin, mat, rolling cutter at a minimum).  Set your sights on something a little more attainable on the basis of your know how.

From watching wedding cake shows when we were getting married....I'd agree with Do-Jo. You could still do a cake with either fondant or regular icing and get a pair of real baby shoes to put on top. I don't think they'd be too heavy for cake to support. And paint some letters on wire and stick them in.

Fondant obviously looks better than regular icing, but in my opinion it doesn't taste better. I believe cake should taste better than it looks, so I'd look into regular icing options myself.

  • I agree with PP that it should taste better than it looks.  However, you could try marshmallow fondant as a compromise.

I would also suggest a real pair of shoes on the top since she can probably use them.  GL on this major endeavor.

cheater.  (oh, and that might be the easiest)
  • I agree with whoever said that if you are asking for instructions on how to make this cake, you have no business trying to make it.

The reason you can't find instructions is that it is 99% likely that it was made by a professional, or at the very least someone who has a lot of training and experience.  This isn't something the average home baker/tinker with fondant can pull off.

If you tried to copy it, you are about guaranteed to be worthy of your cake being on the Cakewrecks blog!  It will be a hot mess!

Marshmallow fondant gets 1 trillion thumbs up from me, but I I still say having fondant to use is going to be the least of your problems... Though I do like pp's suggestion of using real baby shoes.

She asked what I think they used... I think they used a professional.  That's what I would use.

  • I would take this picture to use as inspiration but trying to recreate it without having a background in cake decorating is going to be frustrating and disappointing. I would stick with doing a homemade buttercream frosting and similar decor. I think it would be really cute with pink frosting and a zebra print ribbon wrapped around each layer, that is pretty easy to do and tastes so much better than the fondant (which tastes like wax). You can get some really great ideas from the craft store, such as edible glitter and fun additives like that. Good Luck. Don't get too stressed about the cake, it's supposed to be fun!
  • I'm a lurker, but I do have a little experience with fondant and cake baking/decorating. I would agree with PPs that making the gum paste shoes would be a bit difficult, but I'm not sure that using real shoes is a good idea. I've always been told that you shouldn't use anything not specifically designed to come in contact with food on a cake. For those same reasons, you should encase the wire in something so it doesn't directly touch the cake. I would suggest something like coffee stirrers filled with melted chocolate, then put the wire in it and let it solidify. I did it and it turned out great. Then you can put it in the cake. Also, make sure you have a thick wire and not-heavy fondant or gum paste letters. As long as you go into it knowing it isn't going to be perfect, and you research how to structurally support the cake, you should be fine. I would also suggest the marshmallow fondant, but you should get a little packaged fondant so you know the consistency you should be working with. I'm not a professional, but I've made similar cakes, and that's my opinion.

Lol I'm actually not the one making it! I have a friend who is awesome with cakes, but I couldn't get a hold of her to get a list of what was needed! Thank you though!

  • OP, pm me your email and I'll send you a template for the booties. I make cakes and made a hiking-themed cake a few months ago for a birthday. It was decorated with a pair of fondant hiking boots, autumn leaf fall and chocolate curl "dirt".

The boots are actually REALLY easy to make!
