3rd Trimester

How much are you paying for a doula?

If you don't mind sharing, I am just curious. I know I am late to the game, but I have been speaking with a couple through email, and I have only received a rate from a "doula in training" so far, so I was just wondering what other people were paying. Thanks.

Re: How much are you paying for a doula?

  • Both doulas in my area are in the $300 - $350 range.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm not using one, but I did price them out in my area. They cost between $600-$800. That is definately out of my price range.

  • Near NYC, the range I found was $750-900, in most cases it includes one prenatal and one postnatal visit, in addition to the labor and delivery, plus phone support as needed.

  • In Seattle it varies, but in general a Student Doula, (or anyone without their current certification) is around $500 and certified and more experienced doulas are usually $1000-1800 depending on how many births they have attended and what their breakdown of services is.  I am lucky to have someone who was a practicing certified doula AND midwife's assistant for years, but her certification is out of date because she stopped attending births when she had another child a year ago.  Now she is getting back into it and needs hours to re-certify so I am getting her for $500, (with her experience it is a STEAL here). Good Luck!

  • I'm in NYC (which I'm assuming will be priced higher than many other areas) and we're paying $1400 for ours. This includes 3 visits in our home before delivering, the birth, 2 post partum visits, placenta encapsulation and unlimited phone/email support throughout.

  • $850 in Southern California. I would have loved to find a less expensive doula, but she is literally the only one willing to drive out to where we are. (My husband is in the military and we're stationed in the middle of the desert, an hour away from civilization). It was a tax return "splurge" but I know it will be worth it.
  • Thanks for the responses!

  • $400

She I actually a CMW that does home births but we hired her to be our doula when at home and while at the hospital. Her fee includes two prenantal visits and one postpartum and during labor at home she monitors baby with a Doppler and will check my progress so that I dont head in at 2cm and get sent back home.

DH wanted a doula more than me actually. We are planning to go natural and I think he was nervous about being my coach and not knowing what to do.

  • We're in NYC and paying $800. She is a friend of a friend, and would normally do a sliding scale from $800-$1100 for private clients (bc she gets $1100 through the company she works for). That includes 2 prenatal visits, birth, 2 post natal visits and unlimited support before... I would def get a doula if you want to go completely natural, esp the first time!

  • We paid $500 CDN and she let me pay it in two portions which was kinda nice. Hard to put a price tag on it though, she was SOoooo, soooo worth it! That included a few prenatal visits, and as many postnatal visits that were required to get breastfeeding down pat, which was awesome! Often they are trained lactation consultants as well, and thats great b/c breastfeeding is obviously the best for you and your babe and its cheaper too!
