Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Are you still cutting grapes...etc into tiny pieces?

We had a long week of having friends with kids over. They are all around the same age as DS. My friend reprimanded me for giving her son whole grapes. I got the "doncha know woman, grapes are the biggest choking hazard?!" lecture. I also watched her cut up french toast for her DS into tiny pea sized pieces. I only cut my DS's into long strips so he can bite off them. I dont cut grapes in half, and only cut other fruit into pieces he can hold onto.

Do you still cut LO' s food by the time they are a year and a half?

  • I still cut everything up and I plan to do so until she is 30, you can never be safe enough!

  • Grapes and hot dogs I guess I still would.  And bagels I have to cut small.  But last night he about choked on a pea so great.

I don't cut anything except grapes but those are serious chocking hazards until they are 5.

I somewhat grasped the concept of death by the time I was 5, so I knew that food needed to be chewed. I do remember chocking on hard candies a couple of times. No issues with grapes.

What about blueberries? We don't cut those and they are a little smaller then the grapes?

  • I cut everything, but especially grapes since they're a know choking hazzard.  I'll admit I take it to the extreme - I'm terrified of DS choking.

I slice hot dogs into round coins, just because they are awkward to bit off.

This.  I have serious anxiety about him chocking.

  • Yes, I still cut grapes, and saying that T likes swallow things with minimal chewing, I will be doing so for awhile. If she ate hotdogs I would do the same for those.

I thought the coin rounds actually increased the choking risk since they're uniform, round and the size of the esophogus. I cut grapes in half and hot dogs into pieces.  Blueberries I don't cut because A) they're small and B) they aren't as firm or slippery as a grape so I don't think there's as much risk of them shooting down the throat.

Never heard of inhaling the skin off a blueberry but my toddler must not have the same grasp of mortality that yours does.

Perhaps this wasn't supposed to be funny, but it made me giggle aloud.

    That is all.

  • I halve her grapes, but she always bites into blueberries, so I don't worry about those.

  • I cut up grapes and huge blueberries. Everything else gets cut up, but not into teeny-tiny pieces. She's a pretty good chewer, so I am not too worried about her choking. Now, chocking, on the other hand....well, urbandictionary.com tells me I should be worried about that.

  • i just cut them in half, not tiny peices. i also cut blueberries, but not because of choking, because my kid is kind of a picky PITA and if he doesn't "taste" the sweet right away, he just spits it right out. lol...

lately, he's also started spitting out bites of anything that are too big, so he's driving me crazy unless he is starving, then he'll eat an entire horse in one bite. who knows.

there is a tiny little girl at daycare who walks in feeding herself whole bananas and PB&J sandwiches. no joke.....

  • I don't give her grapes because they're too expensive.  lol.  When they're in season again, I'll just half them.  And hot dogs. I cut them into coins, but then cut those in half.  I try to avoid have food the size/shape of an esophagus.  I do NOT cut french toast (or other food) into itty bitty pieces.  IMHO, that's overkill.

That's what I thought too.  I cut banannas, hot dogs and cucumbers lengthwise and then into pieces.  Never circles.

Some of your siggies tell me that cutting your LO's food into tiny pieces is still warranted. They are younger. But by 1.5 years? I dunno, maybe my DS just has great survival skills. He's been great at just biting into his food. I don't cut grapes nor blueberries. Unless they are the huge globe grapes.

  • We cut some of his food still.  Hotdogs (1/2 length-wise & then slice, although FIL & DH still quarter it & slice into tiny pieces), grapes I cut in 1/2.  I tend to cut bananas just like a hotdog.  Toast/waffles we cut into strips so he can hold them better, although sometimes he likes to be given a whole waffle so he can shred it on his own.

But, most of my cutting is because this kid thinks he's a Hoover vac & just shoves everything into his mouth; think he gets that from his father...  Cutting it just seems to make the food 1) last longer & 2) cut down on some risk if he forgets he's a human that should chew instead of a vac that just sucks everything up.

  • I still cut most everything. Not into tiny pieces, but manageable, because mine will still stuff a lot in his mouth at once. Grapes I ALWAYS cut in half, or even quarter if they're really big grapes. I don't cut blueberries but they're like half the size of a grape anyway right now. But I'll probably cut the grapes for some time still.

Never got the memo, I started doing coins when he was around 14 months.

  • I still cut everything up but not by choice.  Mine have an aversion to biting into anything.  I've tried giving them strips of toast and pancakes but they don't like biting into it.  They will hand it back to me until I rip it into pieces for them.  I'm afraid that they are going to be 5 and still want all of their food cut for them.

  • Grapes, yes. A waffle? We also cut into strips, but when DS was 18 months old I was still tearing/cutting everything into bite-size pieces.
  • DS is now 2, but I don't cut things up as much as I use to.

Like french toast, for example, LO sometimes gets pissed if I cut stuff up too much. But as for grapes, no I usually don't cut them up any more. I just never really thought about it. DS has all his teeth, as soon as he puts it in his mouth he bites it. If I were going on a road trip or something, like he'd be eating and not in arms reach I would probaly cut them up.

  • Grapes - absolutely. I still quarter grapes because they are a huge choking hazard. I also cut up hot dogs (1/2 coins). Actually, DD2 loves raw carrots, and I started giving those to her after I watched her take small bites each time.

ETA: We did BLW too. DD2 does great with whole sandwiches and a whole banana. Grapes are still choking hazards for preschoolers. I don't think doing BLW makes them less of a choking hazard.

  • I don't cut grapes if I am there with her while she is eating them. She bites them in half herself and eats half.

I do cut hot dogs lengthwise, then into smaller pieces.

She eats just about everything else in lager chunk or strip size.

My sister cut her kids food up into tiny, tiny pieces until they were about 8. seriously. she still tries to do it but they freak.

LOL, yeah, I bite them more often than I cut them. I love grapes.

  • I cut some things.  Grapes I cut in half, hot dogs I cut into coins.  It just depends on the food and what is most manageable for her.  She's getting pretty good about wanting to use a fork to eat, but for instance doesnt know how to use it to cut pieces off of say, an enchilada.  So I will cut the enchilada into pieces for her to eat with her fork.

  • I cut those huge globe grapes in half, but only because C will stuff the entire thing in her mouth.

  • I cut up grapes. I haven't fed my kid a hot dog and don't really plan to. Other than that, the only things I cut small are meat and raw/firm fruits and veggies because she only has one tooth and can't tear things apart. Bread, toast, crackers, cheese, cooked vegetables... I give her chunks or strips and she goes to town.

Mine is 2.5. Survival skills are great if you're stranded in the wilderness. But every one's toddler can choke, god forbid. It's just the roll of the dice not that your child has a freakishly advanced esophagus.

This is pretty much siggy worthy. You're killing me today.

And OP, yes, I do cut grapes in half for my DS.

My kid eats whole bananas every single day, she won't accept them any other way.  She also won't eat a turkey burger or waffle if we slice it up, she's a master chewer, but I do slice grapes and hot dogs because of the choking hazard.

  • I still cut everything into bite size pieces and will likely do so for some time. Even though A has the ability to take bites out of things, he prefers to just shove the whole food nto his mouth and swallow it whole. Until he learns to slow down, I'm not taking any chances. The only foods I don't cut are crackers and cereal bars.

    This is great!

Seriously OP you sound quite naive..Even adults can choke on food..Children under age 5 basically have windpipes the exact size of a whole grape..meaning all it takes is your child gets excited over something while eating or the grape slips before he can bite it and guess what?  its stuck in there and probably not coming out...if that is something you are willing to risk, so be it..I will cut my DD's grapes until she's probably 10 cause I dont mess around with that crap !   The reason that certain things are top choking hazards are because actual children have actually choked and died from eating them enough times for them to be considered serious choking hazards.

  • Grapes definitely still need to be cut. I'm glad you haven't had any issues, OP, but I think you've just gotten lucky. They're a big choking hazard. As for the other stuff, I just use common sense.
