You non-halfers probably give your toddlers peanuts, too.

Hmmm, come to think of it, he has had peanuts on occasion. Whole.

I'm a little surprised at how naive some of y'all are about choking. It doesn't matter how good of a chewer your kid is, how long they've been on solids, or how many times they've eaten them before without a problem...choking can happen in the blink of an eye. Your child can get the giggles and inhale a grape, or they can take a deep breath to sneeze and suck down a hot dog. I'm typically a laid back mom, but choking is one thing I don't take my chances with. So yes, even my 3 year old still gets halved grapes, moon hot dogs, and no popcorn.

Yup, same here with my 3-year-olds (assuming you meant half-moon hot dogs).

  • So, by now, the grapes have turned into this:

Ooh, good point. I guess I'll stop feeding them then.

You really don't comprehend why the AAP has singled out certain foods as choking hazards or why there is less risk when they're cut into different shapes/sizes? (And the deal with popcorn is the inhalation hazard.)

  • This thread needs to DIAF.  It's just not even remotely fun anymore.  I bet it'll be revived for weeks though.

OK, there are funny bits here & there.  However, people keep coming in & being very serious aboutcutting up grapes.

  • I still cut grapes in half.  Also cut hot dogs small.  That's really the only things I still cut down.  DS is pretty good about chewing up his food.  I don't think I have ever given him blueberries, but I have never seen huge ones, so I think he'd be ok with them.

  • I was told to cut everything into irregular shapes, not coin.  And even still, DS2 choked on a Golden Graham.  I can't win!
